In conclusion, the three big characteristics that the Jets and the Sharks have in common are love, prejudice, and acceptance. The Jets and the Sharks faced many conflicts just because they are from different countries. This relates to The Outsiders , a book by S.E. Hinton, when two gangs, the Greasers and the Socs, fight against each other and even though they are enemies, they still observe the same world. Later, the Jets and the Sharks realize that they do observe the same world. Much of what goes wrong in West Side Story is actuated by the hatred each group feels about the other.
