“ She had not known the weight until she felt the freedom”( Hawthorne p.134). In the beginning of the book every character upholds a strict understanding with Puritan beliefs. They view the sin Hester commits very offensive and think she should receive a harsh punishment. The letter “A” represents her sin called adultery, but by the end of the book the letter “A” changes meanings. The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne presents many symbols representing multiple characters and locations in the book. Throughout the book the meaning of the letter “A” starts to gradually change.

He knows he has done something wrong that he has even spoken publicly about and sees himself as a hypocrite."The judgment of God is on me," answered the conscience-stricken priest. "It is too mighty for me to struggle with!Heaven would show mercy," rejoined Hester, hadst thou but the strength to take advantage of it” (43). Due to the way society respects him, he cannot come forward and confess the sin he has committed and instead lets Hester suffer for a decision they make. He strongly cares about the way his congregation thinks about him. Due to the sin, he looks at himself as the Black Man in the forest. Due to his sermons about sinning and forgiveness, he realizes he can empathize with sinners and thinks others can do that as well. "Be not silent from any mistaken pity and tenderness for him; for, believe me, Hester, though he were to step down from a high place, and stand there beside thee, on thy pedestal of shame, yet better were it so, than to hide a guilty heart through life. What can thy silence do for him, except it tempt him--yea, compel him, as it were--to add hypocrisy to sin?" (26). He realizes all humans will sin, whether if it is something very large or something very little. Everyone with sin in their live needs forgiveness to be able to move on.
