“Bah, humbug!” This well-known phrase is popular thanks to Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. In this literary classic, Dickens tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a “tight fisted...covetous old sinner” (12). Through a series of hauntings by various Christmas ghosts, Scrooge realizes the error of his ways and changes completely into a warm-hearted, generous man. Scrooge’s tale is a familiar one; countless movies have been filmed, plays have been produced, and references made in other stories and television shows. Each rendition of A Christmas Carol provides its own spin, but none are quite as unique as the “Epic Rap Battles of History: Donald Trump vs. Ebenezer Scrooge.” This rap battle uses key phrases, symbolism, and the assumption that the viewer is familiar with A Christmas Carol to tell Scrooge’s story with an unmistakably modern twist. A typical Epic Rap Battle of History contains two main characters or groups competing against one another to see who can spew the vilest insults. EpicLLOYD and NicePeter use references to the real stories of the competitors to make the battle factually correct and interesting. However, Donald Trump versus Ebenezer Scrooge deviates from the usual format, having Trump succeeded by three other characters, representative of the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. Trump himself represents Scrooge’s business partner: Jacob Marley. The battle begins with Scrooge, in his chair by his fireplace, being startled by Trump.…
