It is with great hesitation that this paper was constructed; the observations within should perhaps never be brought to light. It is in the following paragraphs that you will learn of a troubling young man that exhibits exceedingly peculiar behavior. It is in the interest of many, myself included, that we use a pseudo name for this particular subject, let’s call him, Charlie Brown.
The curios mind of Charlie prompts him to exhibit a distinctive and bizarre array of observable behavior that often result in disturbing conclusions, some that may not be easy to hear. Within my short time of getting to know Charlie and having shared a seat near him, a great deal has been learned. Charlie is remarkable at observing the physical appearance of

Once Ms. Marshall noted that Heroin use negatively affected grades, it is then that Charlie immediately confronted the teacher and threatened Heroin addiction in order to prove his point that she was wrong; he used the term “bet” to seal the challenge. The mind of Charlie Brown is one of great mystery and I believe only time will reveal it’s intricacies. He has been observed evolving his theories based off his own observations about the world around him, to such an extent that some are even self-contradicting. Charlie has observed me and called me the dumbest smart person he knew although he quickly revised this statement and his new theory was that I had an IQ the length of a phone number or simply “ a telephone IQ” for short. It’s awfully strange that Charlie deviated from his initial findings. It is at this very point that the most worrisome of observations appeared. The puzzling mind of Charlie brown displays odd biases the likes of which the world has never seen. He holds the strong belief that left handed people are sub human; that they are less than their right handed counterpart. Furthermore he holds a passionate hatred towards old people, as proof, he stated that they couldn’t drive properly and that they smelled. We can assume that Charlie has held interactions with both the old and left handed and it is thought that they must have left a negative impression prompting him to make an unjustified generalization. Charlie has also developed a
The story Flowers For Algernon is about a man named Charlie. He has a low IQ of 68. He wants to be chosen to under go an experiment to make him smart. Ethics is what is right and wrong, mainly right. Charlie Gordon's doctors did not act ethically when they performed the sugary to make him smarter. They were unethical by not telling him the risks
Despite the amount of traumatising murders Charlie comes across, he is determined to understand people that are different from himself, providing him with a sympathetic and compassionate personality. Charlie's efforts to understand the minds of others does not go to waste as he successfully learns in-depth details about Jack Lionel "I don't know who this man is, but he didn't kill anybody. I've done everything wrong. Mad Jack Lionel isn't a criminal. He's probably not even mad. He's just old and sad and poor and lonely" (Charlie Bucktin p234). Through the sympathetic side of Charlie, a softer and more vulnerable component has been added to the novel, expressing Charlie's curiosity towards understanding Jack. A transition between Charlie regarding someone as dangerous and cruel compared to a harmless and nostalgic man is clear throughout chapter seven of the novel as Charlie begins to develop a further and deeper understanding of Jack's personality traits and motives. Instinct is a powerful aspect of the novel as it begins to delve into the innocence of the mind of Charlie when he originally assumes the worst of Jack before having a moment of realisation where Jack is no longer the criminal but instead a lonely, old man. After evaluating the multiple aesthetic features that constructed this particular novel, the innocence, understanding and sympathetic components are highlighted and contributed to the description of Charlie as a typical
Charlie, also has a peculiar speech pattern. Despite being a young teenager, his language is somewhat outdated; and he has a sardonic sense of humor. He shifts from “fancy” vocabulary to a more simple type of speech on a regular basis. In his first letter of Part 4, he describes someone’s face as “ashen”; but he had previously described his family members using the words “nice” and “fat”. Surprisingly simple speech from someone so seemingly contemplative. He, Charlie, is also very “matter-of-fact” about things. He does not say things that he does not believe to be true; and if he’s unsure, he states his ignorance as a fact. This is easy to see in Part 1 when he states, “I am really in love with Sam, and it hurts very much,” like it was an immovable thought or an unchangeable
Charlie is very far from what most people call normal: he is shy, introverted, awkward, independent, paranoid, confused, respectable and kind; showing many examples of this throughout the book. He keeps to himself for the most part and is constantly in his own head. Aside from the many negative traits he also has many attributes: he is a loyal friend and listens to the people he talks to, he is a caring person and comforts those in need. However he has his flaws as well: Charlie can get very angry and upset at others which causes him to lash out with violence or sadness, he is extremely sensitive, crying frequently and constantly questioning himself. Several of his peers labeled him as nerd or a weirdo, which damaged
As Charlie's intelligence increases he thinks that he will be more liked the higher his intelligence climbs, but later Charlie discovers that whether you are of lower intelligence then most of the population or of higher intelligence you still will not quite fit in. "I've discovered that no one really cares for Charlie Gordon whether he is a moron or a genius. (Keyes 172) Charlie's relationship with Alice also shows how whether he is of extreme low extreme high intellect he still cannot communicate with her the way he needs to. " I'm just as far away from Alice with an I.Q of 185 then when I had an IQ of 70" (Keyes 88). In today's society if a persons thoughts slightly differ from those of the majority of the population then they will be scrutinized and shunned from the others. People are not willing to look at an idea through a different perspective and this is shown in Flowers For Algernon, when Charlie discovers the fault in Dr. Nemur's experiment and confronts him about it, Dr. Nemur treats him like the old Charlie who is to mentally challenged to be correct. It is repeated numerous times during the novel that Charlie was "created" by the experiment and was not a "human being" because of his below 100 IQ before the operation. "I'm a human being, a person- with parents and memories and a history- and I was before you ever wheeled me into that operating room." (Keyes 112). Society needs to learn that even those who are different then most of us still are humans and
The author uses communication style as a method of character development, which the author utilized to build Charlie Gordon’s character. Throughout the book, Charlie’s communication changes from when his IQ is merely 68 to when the surgical procedure raises his IQ to 125. Initially, his grammar is full of errors and simple vocabulary but later improved drastically, after the procedure, by use of complex wordings (Allan 31). The communication style is different between the two phases especially through differentiated personalities and speech between two periods. Daniel Keyes also endeavors to capture the character’s history to enable the audience to understand the events that shape Charlie’s personality.
This entire book highlights both the high and low points in Charlie’s life, and how he changed and has not changed all from his constant value of friendship to his many realizations, based on the one experimental surgery that gave him insight on what life would be like if he was “normal”.
To escape the daily struggles and to cope with how his life is going, Charlie begins smoking outside of his friend group. His sister catches him smoking and is amazed because of how innocent he seemed. This ignorance on her behalf just shows how much Charlie is changing for the worse. After numerous times of smoking, he starts going to parties and getting high. Most readers would expect him to react different to these situations but he welcomes them and makes small notes about other people at the parties. At one of his last parties, he’s on LSD and this just brought his whole emotional well-being to the ground. Even when he’s not under the influence of drugs, he’s still disconnected from what’s going on around him. By the end of the book, Charlie is stealing liquor from his parents and drinking it excessively to escape the realities of the
One example of suspicion found in the story is “I’m guilty of Insomnia. Now what’s the penalty for insomnia? Did you hear what I said? I said it was insomnia.” (Serling, 77) This example states that he was being too suspicious saying that he was not the alien and he said they will begin here that is a nightmare so people did not trust him and wanted him out of here. The second example is “He swings the gun around to point it toward the sidewalk. The dark figure continues to walk towards them. The group stands there fearful, apprehensive. Mothers clutch children, men stand in front of wives. Charlie slowly raises the gun. As the figure gets closer and closer he suddenly pulls the trigger. (Serling, 82) This second example means that Charlie was too suspicious, so he wanted to destroy or kill the dark
For my paper, I am diagnosing Charlie from the film, Perks of Being a Wallflower. Before I delve into Charlie’s diagnosis, I will provide some background information about his character. In the film, Charlie is a 15 year old boy who has recently started high school as a freshman. He lives with both parents, and his sister who is a couple years older than him. Charlie also has a brother who has gone away to college. In school, Charlie is seen to be good with academics, particularly in English, since he has an interest in writing. However, Charlie does not have any friends and his best friend had kill himself in the last year. Furthermore, Charlie is seen to be quite socially awkward around his peers and usually keeps to himself.
Journal Entry 1, Pages 1-15 Starting off, I can already predict this book is going to be very controversial with the whole topic of whether or not science should be allowed to “play the role of God”. So far I believe Charlie is a very likable and friendly character. I also believe due to his mental state he is very vulnerable. I agree strongly with Prof Nemur when he said, “We will use Charlie.
When he regresses back to his pristine state with incipient understandings of the involutions of human nature. As he loses did recollections he still recollects some edifications that he learned when he was perspicacious one of them was. “It’s because I'm so dumb and I didn't know when I'm doing something dumb. People think it's funny when a dumb person can't do it the same way they can,” page 67. Another situation was when Charlie wanted to return back to work and when he went back his former colleagues that were trepidacious of him afore auricularly discerned what transpired and felt sympathy for him. “Mr. Donnegan was very nice when I came back and asked him for my old job of janitor. First he was very suspicious but I told him what happened
After I watched the videos “Charlie bit me” and “The sand box”, I learned that we can get a lot of information if we observe for short time because the children’s interaction is very fast. So, while we are observing, we have to pay attention to small details, such as facial expression, reaction, body expression and not only the verbal interaction.
Throughout the novel Charlie’s personality and intelligence level changes a lot. In the beginning Charlie is happy, has friends, he’s retarded, and can’t remember a lot of things. “I fergot his last name because I dont remebir so good.” (Keyes 2),
I have noticed that Charlie's mom did not prepare dinner for him for couple times. I asked teacher Gigi whether she knew the situation or not. She said that Charlie's mom preferred to bring him dinner instead of order the dinner from us. The problem was she needed to work late so she was not able to deliver the dinner for Charlie during 6 to 7 pm. Charlie has to stay hungry during class time. I do not think it is proper to let the kids go hungry while he is learning. It is not productive and healthy for the children
