Charlotte’s Web By E. B. White Kittaya Amrosoth ACBD 160D1 Dr. Elaine Marchello October 6, 2014 Introduction Charlotte’s Web is written by E. B. White in 1952. The story is about a runty pig named Wilbur and a skilled spider named Charlotte. When Wilbur finds out that he is raised to be food, his best friend Charlotte comes up with an idea to help him. She deceits people by making a web that praises Wilbur to make people think that he is a miraculous animal. The reason that I choose this book is because this book is about friendship, the relationship that we usually do not see in human-animal relationship. Also, it is similar to one of my favorite movies called “Babe” that I used to watch when I was young. Chapter 1 Summary …show more content…
Her family owns a farm. One day during breakfast time, Fern runs outside after her mother tells her that her father is heading to a hog house to kill a runty pig. Fern feels this is unfair to the pig and tries to save its’ life. Her father eventually decides to let the pig go and let Fern have it. She feeds him and names him Wilbur. The human-animal relationship Even though this is the first chapter, the human-animal relationship is obviously seen. Fern sees the pig as one life, not just an animal as she tells father she “see(s) no difference” between animal and human. She thinks it is injustice to take away one life just because one is being small. Perhaps, she might fight for the pig, because she is in the same boat. She feels that pig is helpless and needs her as it is shown when she feeds the pig like a newborn baby. The bond between the two is formed when Fern has named the pig Wilbur. In this book, friendship can be seen between animals to humans, and animals to animals. Wilbur and Charlotte’s friendship is incomparable. Charlotte sacrifices her life and helps her best friend until her last day of life. She never asks anything in return. The only thing that she wants is to know that her best friend is safe and sound. The relationship between Fern and Wilbur shows another aspect of human-animal relationship: friendship. Even though Wilbur and Fern’s friendship does not last. Fern is the one who saves him from the killing when he was little. She raises him up, and takes care of him until he is strong enough. In real life, people do not raise barn animals as a pet, but this book shows that it does not matter what kind of animals you have. The only thing that matters is that you love him/her or
Mr. Jones, the farmer, goes to sleep drunk one night when the most respected animal calls a meeting. Major, as the pig is called, waits until everyone is settled to begin describing the gist of the dream he had had the night before. He tells them that their lives are much harder than they need be. The only reason why they aren’t happy is that they must deal with humans. He says humans are useless and profit off everyone else’s hard work. Unless they rebel, their lives and those of their children will never get better. The group decides that all four-legged or winged animals are friends and will not be harmed when they eventually rebel. Then, Major sings a lively old song that everyone immediately loves, Beasts of England, but they all
One of the themes of the novel ‘Animal Farm’ is that people’s ignorance can contribute to their political and social oppression. How does the animal’s behaviour in this novel support this theme?
When reading a story with animals as the main focus, human characteristics are either found in or projected onto the characters in order to make them relatable. “Man’s best friend” -a.k.a. dogs- are relatively easy to relate to for this reason; people see their dogs as one of the family, talking to and sometimes
Animals by Simon Rich is an outstanding short story which takes a unique perspective on the everyday life in a classroom. The story is written from the point of view of a hamster who spends his tortured life entrapped in a cage. From the first point in this story, it is clear that the purpose of the writing is not to understand the hamster, but rather to analyze the different actions of the people, and to discover that how they act towards the hamsters reflects on their character. It is curious to view the everyday interactions of people through a different set of eyes, that is done by humanizing the narrator’s perspective. Based on the actions of the many people and the treatment of the class pet, the author suggests that human nature is very much a product of the financial circumstances a person is subjected to.
Farm animals need daily care and leaving them was never an option. Mrs. Cole learned about adoration and responsibility from her mother who loved all the animals on our farm. Mrs. Cole describes how “when she passed the barn, she always spoke to the milk cow, and the cow spoke back, a simple moo, but it was always there.” Mrs. Cole and her sister would dress in their Mama's clothes and go down the hill, past the barn, and speak to the cow. Never once did that cow speak to them the way they did to their mom. The cows realized two little girls dressed up in our mother's clothes were imposters and their relationship was based on genuine affection for

At first, Animal Farm prospers and all the animals have the ideal life. But as time goes on, the pigs decide they will make all the decisions for the other animals. Slowly, the pigs become more superior than the other animals and as time passes, many disincentives for the other animals come along the way. As it states in the text, “The mystery of where the milk went to was soon cleared up. It was mixed every day into the pigs’ mash… The animals had assumed that these would be shared out equally; one day, however, the order went forth that all the windfalls were to be collected and brought to the harness-room for the use of the pigs… Some of the other animals murmured, but it was no use,” (Orwell, 30). This adage shows how the animals are not doing much to stop the pigs from being unfair and therefore their journey will only get harder as the pigs start to take full control of the farm. Another quotation from the novel states, “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which,” (Orwell, 155). In the book, the pigs, who primarily were trying to get rid of man’s teaching, started befriending man, and then ultimately became man. Therefore, the way the pigs dealt with their obstacle, the
Human beings are considered to be the greatest creations that were given knowledge, skills and power to rule over the entire planet. However, at the same time, their relationship with other animals and its implications in human civilization cannot be denied. Historically, it is proven that for thousands of years, human beings have developed close contact with animals who were their means of living and at the same time often, great companions. Considering the great significance of animals in the lives of human beings, often their relationships were portrayed in literature by authors. It was meant to help the global community to have a clear understanding of the impact that animals have in the lives of human beings which is very much significant.
There is a saying, “a dog is a man's’ best friend”. In the book Where The Red Fern Grows,by Wilson Rawls, Billy Coleman is a young boy who wants nothing other than two Redbone coonhounds and to hunt in the Ozark Mountains with them. Through his determination, he works up money buy the pups, but he is faced with many struggles along the road. His determination, the will power and strong heart to make it through the struggles, made him the boy he is now. Over all, Billy Coleman and his dogs face many conflicts throughout the book, but he stays determined to make it through.
Friendship is boundless. E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web is a beautiful illustration of how friendship goes beyond our expectations. Although Charlotte’s Web is a children’s novel, it clearly demonstrates what true friendship looks like and how it can shape one’s life. A young pig named Wilbur, alone in the barn and destined to become Christmas dinner, meets
Charlotte's Web Charlotte's Web is a moving story about farm animals. Many writers use abstract and abstruse diction to interpret a particular idea but E. B. White is different. The language used, the style, and the plots in this book are very humorous that I find it so impressive. The author, E. B. White, excels in creating animal characters that can talk and feel normally like humans as a simple farm was depicted as a lively family. Wilbur, the protagonist, is a runt among a litter of pigs.
Hana’s Suitcase and Charlotte’s Web are two very different styles of books. Hana’s Suitcase is a real-life story about a girl who suffered a terrible injustice at the hands of social world beliefs. During the time Hana Brady lived in the 1930s and where she lived in a town called Nove Mesto na Morave in the Province of Moravia in Czechoslovakia she herself, her family and many other Jewish people suffered tremendously and so many people were murdered. On the other hand, Charlotte’s Web is a story about a pig named Wilbur who was born the runt of the litter and was going to be killed because of his size in comparison to his siblings. Although they are very different types of books they do have several things themes and plot points which
The bonds and relationships that develop between humans and animals are much like human to human. This relation is prevalent in the novel The Mouse and the Motorcycle. In the story, a relationship between Ralph, a mouse, and Keith, a boy, develops. The two entities strike an impressive friendship that resembles that of two human best friends that have known each other for years.
Have you ever noticed that people and animals can relate with each other in many different ways? It’s probably never even crossed your mind. But,now you are reading my story and that thought will cross your mind every second, every minute, and every hour of your life. In my three paragraphs I will explain how 3 stories relate to the unit topic. The stories that show the real meaning of people and animals relating are “Monkey Master”, “from My Life With the Chimpanzees”, and “Black Cowboy,Wild Horses.”
Animal farm is a book that describes the harsh reality of inequality and injustices towards people of different races in the form of animals on a farm. In a fictional world, talking animals on a farm overthrow the owner, Mr. Jones, and drive him out of his own farm. These shockingly human animals have many of the characteristics that humans have, notably greed and social class differences. In Animal Farm, the revolution and rule of the animals is used as a metaphor to show how corrupt power can lead to inequality and unfair social classes.
