Chartres Cathedral
Chartres Cathedral is one of the most significant achievements of all the historical architecture. Additionally, it is entirely preserved with its original details. The unique features of the cathedral are intact, and thus when one visits the place, he or she is likely to encounter the authentic architecture work as it was done many years ago. Chartres Cathedral symbolizes an atmosphere of awe and holiness (Katzenellenbogen, 2). As such, it was built for religious purposes. However, it attracts the nonbelievers as well. As a holy building, it has many glass windows to light the building. Due to its height, a double flying buttresses is used to support the high nave. The cathedral was the first building in history that used buttresses since it was considered as necessary for the peoples’ culture and as a sign of authority. It was built to reflect a symbol of power since the religious leaders engaged in politics too. The cathedral has many statuses that represent the Biblical aspects such as Elijah, Isaiah, John the Baptist, Jeremiah, and Simeon (Katzenellenbogen, 9). The standings portray the Christian faith that was used by the architectures while building the cathedral. The interior floor stands thirty-six meters high and is one hundred and twenty-eight meters wide. The sizes show how vital it is and it can host many peoples who visit for religious functions.

He is expected to abandon his childhood dreams and cultivate practicality and factuality. However, imaginations are not limited to unicorns and dragons; it is a skill a person must nurture to realize his dreams and desires. To be imaginative is to be a visionary. Without a vision, a person lacks the sight for compassion, curiosity, and self-consciousness. In this sense, imagination is not only to think outside the box, but also to search deeper inside. In the short story, “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver, Carver develops the idea that a lack of imagination limits a person to the physical and visible world which leads to the blindness to the abstract world and rejection of the uncertain future. It is when a person opens his eyes to the unseen that he can create emotional connection with others and discover the profound truth inside himself.
The Ely Cathedral was built in 1109 but much happened before that time, and has happened since then, on the location where it is standing. The building is 900 years old and took 300 years to be completely constructed. This Cathedral has seen sections damaged, crumbled, restored and replaced, but through all these hurdles and obstacles, the Ely Cathedral is beautiful and eloquent, just how it always has been.

In the story “Cathedral”, author, Raymond Carver, show the readers that a person does not need their eyes to see as sight has a deeper meaning for different people. Within the story, the narrator, husband, describe his experience with his wife’s longtime friend Robert, a blind man who came to visit after losing his own wife to cancer. The story takes place in the husband’s home somewhere in the East Coast near Connecticut. As the husband has a drink and waits for his wife’s arrival with Robert, the husband shows an uneasiness about Robert being blind. Upon their arrival, the husband notices how joyful and happy his wife is with Robert and does not understand why. Inside the home, the husband and Robert had a few drinks accompanied with light conversation until dinner where the husband is impressed at how the Robert can describe the foods there are eating. After the dinner, the husband leaves to the couch to watch T.V. The wife and Robert join the husband him shortly after. After the wife falls asleep on the couch, the husband stops on a channel where they speak of Cathedrals and the blind man want him to describe it. Unable to use descriptive word to help Robert see, Robert asks the husband to draw the Cathedral on a paper thick enough so Robert can feel the lines. Robert joins hands with the husband as he draws on the paper and begins to visualize what a cathedral looks like while the husband has an insight on how to see through the eyes of a blind person, so to speak. A lot of the time, the bias of the world interferes with the perception of others and the way they are viewed, leaving out the realistic factor of how that person’s personality actually is. We make assumptions based on what we were taught growing up, and the experiences we’ve had in life. In the short story, “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver the narrators bias led him to believe that the blind man who was visiting his wife will be nothing but an awkward person who is incapable of doing things on his own. Throughout the story the narrator, learns through multiple experiences that the blind man is not that different from him, and that he can do almost everything an un-handicapped person could do in their daily life.
After reading through Cathedral many times, and highlighting multiple passages, I decided the excerpt above is where I found the most meaning, and a great conclusion for the narrator. The fist line, “It was like nothing else in my life up to now.” is the first time we see the narrator show anything beyond ignorance to the blind; there's a feeling of true understanding. He has been presented as a very close-minded person up until now and it seems like he may have just shown his first form of consideration for something beyond his own realm of beliefs. “But I had my eyes closed. “Cathedral” is a short story written by Raymond Carver, published in 1981. The story is told in the first-person by a man referred to as “Bub.” Bub lives with his wife, who remains unnamed. The premise to the plot of the story is that Robert, a blind man who is friends with Bub’s wife, is coming to visit Bub’s home after his own wife dies. The reader follows Bub’s perspective throughout the experience and is privy to his thoughts and commentary. According to Carver, “Cathedral” differs from his other stories. Carver describes this difference in Fires, “[It] was totally different in conception and execution from any stories that [had] come before. There was an opening up when I wrote the story. I knew I’d gone as far the other way as I could or wanted to go, cutting everything down to the marrow, not just to the bone. Any farther in that direction and I’d be at a dead end” (204). A critic writes, “Carver's figures seal themselves off from their worlds, walling out the threatening forces in their lives even as they wall themselves in, retreating destructively into the claustrophobic inner enclosures of self. In Cathedral, and in Cathedral only, we witness the rare moments of their comings out, a process of opening up in closed-down lives” (Nesset 166). This moment of coming out occurs at the end of the story, and is representative of the culmination of Bub’s development process, which is personal enlightenment. In “Cathedral,” Carver includes five key ideas which convey the message that by focusing on and dealing with problems, reserving judgement, breaking stereotypes, and being open-minded, a person may find themselves confronted with the opportunity of being enlightened, which in Bub’s case, was the experience of a perspective change.

In Raymond Carver’s story, “Cathedral,” we meet the nameless protagonist who is about to meet an old friend of his wife’s. The friend’s name is Robert and he is blind. In the beginning of the story, the narrator is uncomfortable with the idea of having someone with a disability, like Robert’s, in his home. He makes judgments about Robert and assumes that he is going to be like the blind people he has seen in the movies. We also learn the background information about how hife wife and Robert met and became friends. This story is a metaphor for not making blind judgements off of people before you get to know them.

This mountainous structure is seen from about every point of Paris and beyond. From the front, you can see two towers jutting out of an ordinary street. The Cathedral also features large stained glass windows, that are one of the most beautiful features of the structures. From the side, you can see the long body of the Cathedral and the spire sticking out of the top. It is somewhat overwhelming being within feet of the structure, because of the immense height and width of the church.
