(analysis of Chaucer’s use of satire in The Canterbury Tales) Chaucer is known as the father of English poetry. He was a shrewd storyteller and could project a story to an audience with eloquence. In the fourteenth century, Geoffrey Chaucer published The Canterbury Tales. In these tales he tells the stories of a group of people going on a pilgrimage to Canterbury. While on this pilgrimage, all the travelers have to tell stories, and we begin to see insights on their lives, jobs, and the scandals within these. Chaucer uses satire (the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices) when writing these stories. Chaucer’s use of satire is present in his critique of the Catholic Church, the patriarchy, as well as class and nobility. First, Chaucer’s critique of the Church and use of satire is prominent. He uses characters such as the Friar, and the Pardoner to portray the corruptness of some of the members of the Catholic Church. He does this by using the women that are on the pilgrimage. He writes these in The Wife of Bath’s Prologue. She tells stories about herself and of all of her past husbands; she has had five and is looking forward to her sixth. The Wife of Bath is very radical in her presentation in opinions regarding the patriarchy.She brings up points of how women are actually smarter than men and how they know how to manipulate situations for their benefits. She says, ” But since I had them wholly in my hand and they had given to me all their land,why should I pay them heed and try to please ,unless it were for profit and for ease?.” (lines 211-214) Here you can see that she knows how to get what she wants from men.
