The girls were all nervous. The music was loud and they hit their first stunt. Then, the stunt group moved to a different spot on the mat. Maggie, the back spot, was the one who called out the counts so that Mauri, Carci, and Reece all knew when to do the stunt. Maggie got so nervous that she got off beat and started the count wrong. Mauri pushed Reece’s foot up before Carci did and that made the stunt fall apart. The girls ended up dropping Reece in the second stunt. When Reece fell to the floor she tried to break her fall by using her hand. Mauri, Carci, and Maggie couldn’t catch Reece before she hit the ground. The music stopped and the EMTs came onto the floor where Reece was laying, holding her hand and crying. They put a brace on her hand and carried her off of the floor into the back room where they could check her out better. She was devastated and so

Cheerleaders and coaches from schools in Berks County held the annual Cheer For a Cure event in the Topahawken middle/high school gymnasium on Sunday, November fifteenth at one o’clock pm. Cheer for a Cure started in 2005 and is a community-based organization meant to help kids and many adults who have cancer. Their goal is to stop cancer from spreading and save people’s lives by sending donations to research facilities worldwide, and the cheerleaders from the schools of Wilson, Daniel Boone, Exeter, Alvernia College, and Twin Valley wanted to show their support with this fundraiser. He held the first summer cheerleader training camps which grew into the National Cheerleading Association ("Cheerleading" 2). From there, Herkimer oversaw the growth of cheerleading into high schools and the National Football League, and pioneered the use of spirit sticks, dance routines, and his signature jump, the "herkie" ("Being" 1). College cheerleading championships were first broadcast nationally in 1978 which greatly aided the cheerleader's ascent into icon status. From there, competitive cheerleading took off leading to the establishment of all-star gyms, independent of any school or team affiliation. As for the cheerleading industry, Varsity Spirit Corporation now monopolizes the market on all things cheerleading: camps, competitions, uniforms, and more. Although the purposes of cheerleading squads now vary, the essential qualities of a cheerleader rarely do.
Cheerleading involves skills which require the strength of football, the grace of dance, and the agility of gymnastics. Complex maneuvers are performed which challenge the limits of the body. Safety organizations such as the AACCA were formed to develop safety rules to guide programs in the safe performance of cheerleading gymnastics, which include jumps, partner stunts, pyramids and tumbling. Cheerleaders do not give up their time to practice for nothing; most teams participate in multiple competitions throughout their yearlong season. Both high school and all-star cheerleading teams are given the chance to compete. Every year high school squads can participate in one of numerous national championships while all-star squads compete against teams from all around the globe at The Cheerleading Worlds. For “Worlds”, teams come from everywhere including China, Chile, Britain, Canada, Australia, and France. Attending the Worlds or Nationals is a privilege, and teams must qualify at smaller local and regional competitions first.

It was a cold January 16th, 17 of us were returning from Russia, when suddenly our plane’s engines malfunctioned and we crashed. 15 of us survived, as for our weapons, they were as destroyed as if they went through a compactor. Chase had a broken arm. “Argh, anyone know how to put a cast on an arm? Fortunately James knew how to. We decided to try and find supplies for a fire and shelter. Once we had a fire going Steve, Jimmy, Mike, and Tommy went out to get some sticks for a bigger fire and for the shelter. Jimmy came running back exhaustively exclaiming “The others fell in a river hurry they’re drowning!”
“It doesn’t matter what people think about cheerleading, if it’s something you love to do then that’s all that counts.” -Unknown. When you look at the sport of cheerleading, every person who steps on the mat performs with their all and leaves their heart out there. First off, choreography and practices before the season starts are the most challenging. There’s nothing better than the feeling after hitting a routine perfect after long weeks of stressful practices. Meanwhile, our breaks from competition cheer are game nights, also known sideline cheer.

“Cheerleader of the Year.” I remember my reaction when I heard my name announced through the sound system after this prestigious title, the syllables echoing through the competition arena. There must have been a mistake. Among so many talented, hard-working competitors, including more experienced, male participants, had the judges really selected me? Recounting the night before, my mind flashed back to my routine, all skills seamlessly executed with surprising amplitude for my small stature. My hard work had led me to accomplish more than I thought possible, I had become XtremeSpirit’s 2011 Cheerleader of the Year on March 27, 2011.
Julie was a fifteen-year-old girl. She not only looked beautiful, but was also famous in her school for being an athletic star in various sports events. Aspiring to be a gymnast when she grew up, Julie joined the gymnasium team in her school and had been elected the team captain for her excellent performance. Now her dream was shattered by the unexpected car accident. She could not believe the misfortune that had befallen her, although the physical and mental pain felt so menacingly real.
Booming voice. I walked into the mats more nervous than ever. Getting in to my correct position my gut felt hollow and I was felt sick. Waiting for the music to come on was like waiting for pot to boil, long and drawn out. "Medomak Valley Pathners, we're back for redemption...". The music had started and we were really performing. I though to myself we need to hit the first stunt and we did. Im in a positiion where I can't see the other stunt groups so when the crowd started to cheer and the roar, I new all the stunt groups it their skills. They next challenge would be jumps, they needed to be timed and clean. As I started to jump I saw everyone it and it looked so good I stated to get more excited than nervous but I knew I still had more challenges. They next thing challenge was the second stunt, this stunt we turn the direction of the stunt. We pushed as hard as we could getting her to stand and lock her leg. We hit it, I thought to myself. Now the only challenge left was the pyramid. This was the one thing that could separate us from wining and losing. If one thing went wrong the whole thing could fall apart. We pushed as hard as we could to toss, flip and throw her in the air. We hit it, and everyone new that we had it made form here on out. All that was left was the dance. The team knowing that we were almost done pushed all of our energy out into this dance. We were tight, clean, and had good facials. "Panthers!!!!" We called bellowed. That was the end, or one chance, we did it. I felt sick but that didn't stop me from hugging my hardworking teammates. We got of the mats. All that was left was to wait and find out the scores from the
Group Organizational Structure/ Member Status: Throughout the 5 years on my high school competitive cheerleading team the team’s structure varied in size anywhere from 24 people to 8 people, but the member status was always the same. The seniors on the team were the captains that ran the team under our two head coaches. Each member had a role and a purpose on the team that all related to a very high interdependence between members.
