What is yellow with black spots, loves to run fast, and is one of the most popular cats in the zoo and wild? Cheetahs, muscular fast cats, are one of the most gentle cats at the zoo and in the wild. The black spots and the yellow coat gives the cheetah a weird and unique physical characteristics. The habitat the cheetah lives in is just as important as the behavior. The cheetah’s behavior is very important to help them survive. The habitat may be important for the cheetah’s survival, but it's the diet that is more important for the cheetah's survival as well. Hunting is a vital part to the cheetah's survival, behavior, and habitat. Cheetahs sometimes hunt in tall grass areas to stalk their prey and then surprise them. They have very good camouflage the spotted and yellow coat really help the cheetah blend in so they can plan a surprise attack on their prey. When a cheetah gets his meal his strong jaws and a rough tongue help it tare apart the meat. Cheetahs prey are Ostriches, other birds,hares,lizards,frogs,eggs,tsama melons,and antelope are all on the menu for a cheetahs meal. When a cheetah catches one of its favorite foods it drags the prey over to a shady place and rests for 30 minutes after the hard run and then enjoys his meal. A cheetah catches meals by tackling or pushing over its prey and puts its paw over its throat to kill it (“Wexo 4-5”). A cheetah mostly hunts in very early mornings or sometimes very late afternoons because at those two specific times their food is usually active at these two times. When the cheetahs go hunting they have to be very careful because if the get a kill lions,leopards,jackals,hyenas, and vultures usually steal their kill and those are also the cheetahs top predators besides the jackal and the vulture. The cheetahs try to avoid these animals while hunting and on a normal bases (“Johnson”). To catch its prey a cheetah relies on its incredible speed and it also uses it incredible speed to run from predators. Cheetahs don’t just hunt alone they hunt in groups of 2-4 to hunt bigger prey. When in groups they hide behind rocks and tall grass and then all come out at once and attack or they just run down their prey(“Out”). All and all stalking, hiding, and running down, the cheetah is able to survive by hunting.
