Children all around the world are going through a lot when it comes to child abuse, especially the children in the United States. According to Child Abuse Statistics (2012) more than three million reports of child abuse in the United States and these reports involves more than six million children. The United Stated have a really high number of child abuse crime compared to other countries. Every ten seconds a report of child abuse is made. The United Stated lose about four to seven children every day because of child abuse and three out of four of these children of under four year old. Child abuse is a serious problem in the United Stated and the numbers of report and death of children to child abuse increasing.
There are many things that cause parents to abuse their children and there are also many affects that abuse has on the child being abused. You cannot pinpoint one cause for child abuse, because parents abuse their children for many different reasons. One reason for the abuse is that the parents were abused as children. So, this is the only way they know to discipline their children. Another reason is that the parents are teenagers and not ready for children One more reason for the abuse is alcohol and substance abuse. The affect that abuse has on children is not only physical but the abuse affects children on many different levels. In the beginning of this course, maltreatment meant getting hit in areas of your body besides your buttocks. But as this class progressed through this class it gets much deeper than that. According to the New York Office of Child and Family Services, maltreatment is defined as the quality of care a child is receiving from those responsible for him/her. When a parent or individual who is legally responsible for a child causes, “harms to a child, or places a child in imminent danger” (OCFS n.d) by not supplying a child with basic care and needs, such as “food, clothing, shelter, education or medical care” (OCFS n.d) when a guardian has the financial ability to provide for the child. Abandonment and inadequate supervision of a child by a parent who is using drugs or alcohol while caring for a child are also considered maltreatment.
Physical child abuse is a major social problem which can have an effect on children in numerous ways depending on the extent of the abuse, the child, and the abuser. Physical child abuse can impact children negatively and lead them to delinquent acts as well as them carrying on these behaviors into adulthood. Previous research was gathered and revised of researches done in question of this topic. The paper focuses on what the effects are of physical child abuse and how they can result to crime and delinquent acts. Theoretically juvenile delinquency can be a result of being physically abused, especially if it’s by a parent or guardian is cohesive to theories such as the social learning theory. Child abuse is a devastating problem all across the world. All genders, ages, races and ethnicities are represented among the abusers and the abused. There are different types of child abuse, but all of them can leave emotional and physical scars that will last a lifetime. Child abuse is and will be a an overwhelming epidemic if nothing is done to understand it and/or try to stop it.
I choose to research this problem because I wanted to learn of what goes through parents minds when abusing a child. Why do they do it and what do they get out of hurting their child? Not just that, but I wanted to learn more about how they can stop this. Coming from me, a teen, although I can’t relate to this topic because I have never been through something like this, I want to learn more from it because people hide many things and I was thinking, what if their is someone in my class who gets abused, but they are just hiding it from others. I want to be able to lend a hand to others who are too afraid to say anything, I want them to know that they aren’t alone and that their is help out there. Acoording to Healthy Children.org they stated that, “Most child abuse occurs within the family. Risk factors include parental depression or other mental health issues, a parental history of childhood abuse, and domestic violence.” Which means that the reason why children get abused by their parents or legal guardian is because they had also went through that and they believe that it's the only solution. Abuse can lead to death or injury for the rest of a victim's life, from either the perpetrator or themselves. In order to prevent child abuse society must: recognize the types of abuse, understand common causes of abuse, know the characteristics of abusers, and realize the effects abuse has, not just on the child, but on families and communities across the world.
