Many people in society do not think child abuse is a serious problem. Many think it is not as bad as others make it out to be but they do not realize this is a problem that in America every ten seconds a report on child abuse is being made. Children can be harmed and injured in numerous ways. Children that are neglected and abused suffer many primarily short-term effects thereafter.
Child abuse is any mistreatment or neglect of a child that results in purposely inflicted harm or injury. Neglect is the most common form of child abuse. Children can be left unattended without proper supervision or shelter, leaving the child at risk of danger or unprotected from harm. Neglect is also when the child is left hungry or dirty. The child may not be receiving adequate clothing based on the weather. Or the adequate medical services the child may need. Children who are abused and neglected do not get the love and attention they need.
Children that are neglected suffer short-term effects to their physical health. Most children that suffer from malnutrition due to neglect are usually very young. Babies and young children depend on others such as their parents or care takers to get fed, as they do not have the resources or knowledge on how to feed them selves. Nutritional neglect can lead to malnourishment. In some cases the neglect is not on purpose as some families do not have enough recourses for food.
