While I hesitantly explained why I was passing fliers in their neighborhood, I could not help but notice the five young men’s Spanish worded tattoos running across their faces, chests and arms. All signs unexpectedly indicated that I was not only standing in the company of members from the MS-13 gang notorious for committing some of the vilest crimes in North and Central America, but also conversing with them about soccer and life. As my attempt of establishing rapport continued, it was hard not to think of their reputation of recruiting teenagers as young as thirteen years of age, ironically the same teenagers that my church and I were trying to save. Regarding that confrontation, and the similar ones that followed over the seven summers …show more content…
For close to six months I had the privilege of shadowing Dr. Chu at a family medicine clinic where the majority of her patients were Hispanic. During that time, she became not only a mentor, but also an exceptional role model of someone who showed genuine compassion to individuals not being able to afford health care treatments regularly. Beyond extending payment due dates and exuding concern and affection for her patients’ families, she showed a level of commitment regarding cultural competence that resonates with me to this day. With her warm personality and fluency of the Spanish language I would repeatedly see noticeably reserved and apprehensive first time Hispanic patients become shocked and relieved to hear their doctor speak in their native tongue. By simply learning to speak their language I witnessed how a doctor can use medicine and cultural competence to help others in a more personalized way and further develop a greater level of trust. It is this same level of commitment and personalized care that I strive to use day in and day out while currently working as an EMT. Whether it is by smiling, bandaging, and telling a young person suffering from a sports related head laceration injury that everything will be alright or simply transporting an elderly patient and holding their hand after a fall, I am certain that my efforts as an EMT are teaching me something new each day regarding cultural competence, and the responsibility that is required to help individuals in real life emergency
The United States is a nation of immigrants; they have virtually every culture of the world within its borders. Due to this reason, there must be a certain level of cultural competency within its people. A comparison and contrast will be made to compare the Hispanic cultural views on medical care to the American cultural views toward medical care. I chose to explore Hispanic culture because of my background but most importantly due to its richness of unique characteristics. I will provide an overview on how heredity, culture, and environment can influence behavior in the medical office. Furthermore, I will express my opinion about why a medical assistant,
I am a Brazilian black male with military experience and diplomatic knowledge who grew up in a low-income household in a developing country. In addition, I have traveled to about 35 countries and am acquainted with people from different socioeconomic backgrounds, religions, ethnic groups and nationalities. These characteristics and experiences allow me to see the world from perspectives that are unusual for most people. Besides being open-minded and non- judgemental toward all my future patients, I personally understand the difficulties faced by people of color, immigrants and individuals from low-income families. In sum, my background and my cultural literacy will allow me to be a sensitive and culturally aware patient-centered care.
In the preparation of writing this paper, I reviewed several educational videos from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (n.d.) that show healthcare providers interacting with patients from different cultures. I chose the video that shows a Hispanic man interacting with his surgeon. I chose this video because all counties in Ohio except one are seeing increases in the Hispanic population. There has been a nine
Jackson appeared withdrawn, and was somewhat embarrassed before stating that he did not do well in school. Jackson knows that he can perform better in school. When the other children began to tease Jackson, he was ready to fight some of them. This is typical behavior for Jackson, and is also a pattern of disorganized attachment. Children with a disorganized pattern in infancy tend to show disturbed patterns of relationships, subsequently, their relationships with peers can often be characterized by a “fight or flight” pattern of alternate aggression and withdrawal. Jackson’s coping skills when upset, threatened, or embarrassed is fight, unless the person is physically bigger than him. If this is the case, Jackson uses flight to cope, and seeks his grandmother for protection and comfort.

The observation took place between a mother and her son. The child appeared to be about 24 months old. The video was 10 minutes and 21 seconds long. In this video, the boy, his older brother and sister, and his mom are painting wooden pineapples and flowers. The paint being used is in six connected plastic containers with pop lids. There is also a brush for each child, a cup of water for each child, and paper towels present on the table. The mom is specifically helping the youngest boy, only the two of them are shown in the video. They are painting outside on a small plastic table outside on what appears to be a deck. Another woman is present as well, again not pictured, and the dad walks by on two separate occasions. Both the women and the dad have small interactions with the boy.
