All around the world more than 10 million children under the age of 18 are fighting in a war. More than half voluntarily, and the other fourth forced. These children are drugged, and taught that it is good to be a slaughterer, a murderer. Yes, some don’t have a choice. But to think of all the things they were mindlessly taught. Do you really think they can change, just like that? Child soldiers have been responsible for some of the most brutal and violent acts in wartime, and many who are released into the real world, end up going back into their old ways. Not prosecuting child soldiers may encourage commanders to use more child soldiers to commit war crimes that would otherwise be punished if an adult did them. Do we really want a bunch of …show more content…
That is an ok idea, but it has many faults. One reason is that many children in rehabilitation end up doing violent things to the other kids or assaulting the workers. Ishmael Beah discussed with the interviewee that when he and a group of his fellow child soldiers were put into rehabilitation, they repetitively stabbed the man taking care of the them. He then went to the hospital, but when he came back he just got hurt again. Why should we be giving them love and food, when all they are going to do is stab us in the back? Literally. These adolescents are taught from a very young age that it is good to commit violent acts. They shouldn’t be released immediately, but they should also not be sent to jail if they were forced to be in the military. There needs to be an in between. Children need tough love. They need to be taught that if they continue down the road of killing, what will happen to them. Even the Bible says “Spare the rod, spoil the child.” Meaning, if you do not punish a child when they do something wrong, they will not learn what is right. If you do not punish child soldiers, there is a likely chance that they will continue down the wrong road. The sad thing is, many of the child combatants grew up in a world where brutality is normal. The result is a violent gift that keeps on giving, and that violence becomes their second
At a young age it’s difficult to grasp the concept of death, but as time passes, the youth turn into the old and the old turn into the deceased. Whether people like it or not, death plays a role in their lives and it’s something no one can escape. Child soldiers are forced to kill, and if they don’t then they too are killed. Young children are trained into fierce warriors every day, and stopping this action has proven to be difficult. It can be argued from a recruiter that brings in children that children are disposable, easy to train, and almost infinite. Most of these kids never receive a chance to do what they want in life, furthermore it seems like children, especially in Africa, are being picked off the streets they’re grapes on a grapevine. The International Justice System appeals to cases like this everyday, as it can be a struggle to understand if a child is truly remorseful, and if they deserve amnesty. Children who are forced into crime should be given a chance to redeem themselves, as they generally have no intention to cause harm.
Child Soldiers Ishmael Beah once said “My squad is my family, my gun is my provider, and protector, and my rule is to kill or be killed”(Beah 116). Most children live a normal and happy life, but not all children live that way. Some children hold baseball bats while others hold guns larger than they are; some children dodge dodgeballs, others dodge bullets. Most children go home to see their parents or guardians, child soldiers often go “home” to their squads and Lieutenants. Child soldiers can be rehabilitated if civilians and officials aren’t indifferent .
These kids are in no condition for fighting in armed rebel groups but the numbers of these kids are starting to go up. “Over 8,000 children are fighting in armed rebel groups, battling the U.S-backed government.” They are taught to kill and are forced to think that killing is a good thing, plus, the guns they are supposed to use are even heavier than most of these kids, so that clearly shows they shouldn't be using them. These child soldiers need to be put in rehabilitation instead of being put in prison, they are being forced to take drugs, they are brainwashed into thinking
Recently, two million children have died over the past ten years due to becoming a child soldier. A huge deplorable development that has extended recently is the increase of child soldiers. Children are constantly being used as soldiers for various reasons. In some countries, there are more child soldiers than they are adults because children are more compliant. Children have been exploited as soldiers because they are being recruited to do a violent action, it is difficult for them to, later on, assimilate back to their lives, and child soldiers are regularly used in developing countries.
A lot of the children interviewed within the first chapter of Peter W. Singer’s book Children at War are under the age of 12. They speak of torturing people in the most horrific of ways. Such as when joining the paramilitaries, A., age twelve, states that the first thing they make you do is kill someone. A random person is picked for the recruits to chop off his hands and arms. It is important to realize however, that not all of these child soldiers are as young as 7. Singer explains that a “A ‘child soldier’ is generally defined (under both international law and common practice) as any person under eighteen years of age who is engaged in deadly combat or combat support as part of an armed force or group.” What is most horrendous is
Although some may argue that child soldiers should be given amnesty and not be punished for their crimes they are wrong. For example, they had a decision and many chances to not commit crimes, but most child soldiers decided to keep on living and kill their families. In the article, “Child Soldiers: Victims or Perpetrators”, they discuss that child soldiers join because they get tricked. As it states, “Children are forced by commanders through false promises, drugs and things which you can’t even imagine, to kill innocent civilians, other children and even their own families.” This shows kids could’ve denied being a soldier but they easily fall for trick to join then they decide to kill their families because they get told to do so.
Child soldiers should be given amnesty because they were forced into having to go to war and if they refused to then they were either shot or killed. They were drugged if they said yes so then they will actually go out into war and fight. These kids knew what they were doing but at the same time they did know what they were doing and they couldn't resist it because they would be shot or most likely killed. So think about it if you were in charge of a country with child soldiers asking for amnesty would you give the child soldiers
Children aren’t mature enough to make life or death decisions. All child soldiers should have a chance to be forgiven. “Others enlist ‘voluntarily’, usually because they see few alternatives.” ("From Cradle to War." Amnesty International. Amnesty International USA, Web. 3 May 2016.) Children aren’t wise enough to make the decision, and deserve a chance to be forgiven, just like an immigrant has a chance to become a citizen. And even though once someone is killed, they are permanently dead, the children who kill don’t really know what they’re
In my opinion, I believe child soldiers should be given amnesty unless they kill. Once they have that burden they should be given harsher sentences and without restraints to what can and can’t happen to them. One example of a child soldier who was given legal forgiveness is Ishmael Beah. Ishmael was forced into being a soldier after he was separated from his family at the age of 12. Ishmael dreaded being a soldier and seeing innocent people being killed. The only reason he stayed was because he he needed a place to stay. Running away also meant the risk of being shot, kidnapped, tortured, and killed. In other words Nobody dared try and escape, for they would surely die. Ishmael was also addicted to drugs. The commander would use drugs, such a cocaine, to control the children. They soon would become dependent and and do whatever needed to fulfill their bodies need for drugs. In 1997, Ismael and several other children were rescued by the UNICEF. When Ishmael arrived in the U.S, he underwent a rehabilitation process that helped him to adjust to a civil way of life. He went on trial but was given amnesty due to his age and the severity of his war crimes. Ishmael claims he cannot remember whether he killed or not, and if he did there was not a sufficient amount of evidence to prove he commit a crime. This is why Ishmael was given legal forgiveness, and in this case It was an agreeable
Are you aware that right now, at this very moment, there is a group of young boys ages 8-13 who are clenching a gun being ordered to kill against their will? It’s understood that others opinions about the dangers of child soldiers being free are only because they don’t want to risk anything but, isn’t life all about taking risks? You risk your life leaving the house, and breathing. Also, countries should not prosecute child soldiers for the crimes they committed during wartime. There also should not be an international minimum age of criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity. Here are three reasons why they should not be prosecuted or held responsible. Also that there should not be an age limit. One. Children are afraid, young, and clueless. Two. Children are 99.99% of the time drugged, forced, and brainwashed. “Children are often brainwashed and drugged before they are forced to fight. Their vulnerability can allow warlords to make them into cold-blooded killers” (O'Neill 1 ). Three. Children are independent, lonesome, and they want/need a family. One that gives them love.
At eight no kid would want to be subject to this way of life but some know no different ways of young life, this is what they are taught and what they assume is correct. They are brainwashed and in place of normal childhood behavior is taught aggression and violence. Rachel Nuwer from the smithsonian says ¨Teenage brains are like soft, impressionable play dough.” meaning those teen years are crucial to their developing traits and brain. Another source says the most important time of child's life to become who they are is the age of 4-9 years of age. This means they need ethics and morals to continue on but child soldiers are giving the opposite of that so how do you expect them to go down the path of right and not wrong when to them it's all a messed up maze? Someone opposed to the amnesty of young soldiers could consider this very dangerous and an obvious reason to ban the amnesty the deserve. Others see it as a chance to remold these young people's mind and put them back on the right path and off the path of destruction. The soldiers would be fully tested to see if there is permanent damage from this awful experience. Just because some may be harmful doesn't mean all shouldn't get a chance at a new and better
The use of child soldiers have become a normal contribution to armies, especially in countries such as Africa. Although, countries such as Afghanistan, India, and Libya have been using child soldiers since 2011. According to “Children in Conflict: Child Soldiers,” there has been 36 countries involved since 1998. Something needs to be done about this issue due to the fact that thousands of
First let's go over the basics shall we, Due to lack of mature soldiers multiple foreign countries use children as soldiers. This for most of the children is not ok so they refuse so these governments will drug these kids making them violent and susceptible to most things, And this happens in a lot of smaller countries as the article armed and underaged reads “that there are 6 countries that use child soldiers in africa alone.” So let's say that they do live and come home only for the government to say you need to serve the death penalty, to which other people say no they don’t they are granted amnesty, to which the government says they are a threat and the best choice for our country is for us to kill them and in all honesty it would be best if they did.
Did you know that up to thirty percent of child soldiers are female? This is because they have a higher risk of being sexually abused, including rape. They are also given to the commanders as wives. In some parts of the world, such as Yemen and South Sudan, there is tremendous dispute over the subject of child soldiers. The history of child soldiers go back to WW1 and WW2. When the number of German soldiers started to drop during the war, Nazi leaders began to enlist children as young as twelve years old. The Asians also did the same when they were battling against the Japanese in WW1. In Africa, child soldiers are still used today. Child soldiers should receive amnesty because they were fighting for their just cause, they fear the consequences
As competent and ethical social workers, we strive to meet the clients where they are at, however, we ourselves need to be aware and acknowledge where we are at in terms of our own biases, vulnerabilities, traumatic events, cultural values and personal experiences. To effectively provide the best possible services, we have to be self-aware of our own vulnerabilities and do our own work to ensure we do not further harm the clients. Self-awareness is an ongoing process. We are constantly growing and experiencing new things, we ebb and flow, confirming or revoking set beliefs and biases or creating new ones. Therefore, as ethical social workers, it is our obligation to practice mindfulness and self-awareness.
