Childbirth is the biggest step in Maternity care. The biggest and most important goal in maternity care is to end up with a healthy baby and healthy mom. In a few short years, I plan to start a career centered on healthy women, healthy babies and maternity care. I will be the entering the field of midwifery. I found an interest in midwifery through my current job. I currently work on the OB/GYN floor at Trinity Hospital. I have seen many child births through my job. It is such a rewarding experience for everyone involved. To help bring another life into this world it is such a gratifying role to play in society. That is the role a midwife is lucky enough to play, and that is why I have such an interest in the field. An important question to
A labor and delivery nurse is a nurse who cares for woman and newborns during antepartum, intraparetum, postpartum, and neonatal stages of birth. These nurses take vital signs to make sure the mother and her newborn are healthy. Labor and delivery nurses aren’t there for the medicine they are also there to provide support for the mother and the family. I would like to become a labor and delivery nurse because I love helping and taking care of others, especially when it comes to babies, I have always been interested in how the human reproduction systems works, and I love seeing others happy.
Being a midwife refers to a profession where the midwife would work in partnership with the women throughout her pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period. Supporting, guiding and empowering women throughout their entire pregnancy, from the months leading up to the birth, labour itself and the postnatal period fascinates me. It is rare in other medical careers to form such strong connections over a large span of time, with not only the patient but also their partners and families. I have always been viewed as hardworking and dedicated, with the ability to work autonomously and in a group, something that is essential for midwives. My positive attitude to learning has been rewarded with leadership roles of house captain and school prefect. Currently I am completing an A level in Biology and studying Health and Social Care at AS level, both of which have been chosen specifically with Midwifery as a future focus. My A-level studies in Spanish, English and
How many times in life we dream about having a career that we like? This has been my dream for many years, dreaming about being a Nurse Midwife. In order to achieve my goal first I have to do some research about the qualities and the requirements that I need to meet this career criteria. There are various ways to do the research, but I decided to do an electronic research. I used www.bridges.com, www.cacareerzone.org, www.bls.gov and www.wikipedia.com as the sources to do my career research. Learning and knowing more about the career will help us to be prepared to enter the work field.
Throughout the first few weeks, being assigned to the different nurses, I had the opportunity to overlook and observe about six patients they were caring for. These mothers in postpartum care were from around the same gestation time period but most had undergone one of both childbirth procedures—either vaginal delivery or caesarean section. All the mothers were kind and tolerant to allow me to care for them or to aid the nurses to care for them, in which I consider myself to be grateful—in return I did my best to by amiable and tried my best to carry out the given tasks in the best of my abilities.
Childbirth can be described as one of the most rewarding and also painful experiences in a woman’s life. Most women choose some type of method to ease pain, however, there has been a lot of controversy over which pain management method is the most effective. Not only is the pain management method a factor, mothers have to choose which type of childbirth is right for them. Women can choose from out-of-hospital or in-hospital births and with the exception of complications, they can decide whether they want to deliver naturally or have medicinal assistance. The Center of Disease Control and Prevention reports that the percentage of out-of- hospital births has increased from 1.26% of U.S. births in 2011 to 1.36% in 2012, and has been increasing
These sharks reproduce viviparous, meaning that the young organisms develop within the body, not by eggs and these mother sharks have a yolk sac placenta. The female shark usually reproduces two to four pups, but there are occasions when they give birth to only one pup. The range is from one to ten pups. Mating season usually begins between November and March. However, if there is no male around, the female is capable of being asexual.
I realized that midwifery training and being a mom to little ones is very difficult. There was no way I would be able to be on call all of the time with my own tiny breastfeeding babies. So, my dream of becoming a midwife got put on hold. I really wanted to find a way to grow and learn and stay involved in the birth world. This led me full circle to finally discovering how I could combine my love of teaching with my love of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. I enrolled in a Childbirth Educator course through Childbirth International and completed my certification. Along the way, I also discovered my love of breastfeeding. I had been learning so much through my studies but had now discovered it as a breastfeeding mom. Breastfeeding became a complete passion. I began helping other mothers in my community and then decided to enroll in a Breastfeeding Counselor program through Childbirth International as
The role of a midwife encompasses much of my eagerness and it has always been the role I feel I was made for. I understand that midwifery as a profession comes hand in hand with mental, emotional and physical challenges. These challenges in my opinion are far out-weighed by rewards. I believe it a privilege to be providing care and support to women during the most incredible journey of their life. For me, sharing such special moments will never grow old.
Midwifery is a role that hugely appeals to me as it isn’t just clinical skills that are offered to the women, it allows for a relationship to form with them and their families. This is important to me because it would allow the women to feel completely comfortable in a stressful but life changing event. I have always wanted to be take up a caring, supportive and helpful career and as soon as I did some research into the role of a midwife I was immediately hooked and knew it was the right path for me to follow.
Two years ago, I was introduced to midwifery when my brother and his girlfriend were considering options for the impending birth of my nephew. Since that time, everything I’ve pursued and studied has helped bring me a step closer to becoming a midwife myself. I find pregnancy, childbirth, and babies to be the most fascinating things in the world. I spend heaps of time independently researching different aspects of childbirth. Last year, I wrote a research paper on the differences between home births and hospital births, and I’m currently working on a podcast about home births and the role midwives play. There's so much knowledge out there that I was oblivious to; once I figured out that pregnancy, birth, and even postpartum care need not be
More women today are opting to give birth naturally. There are many ways that women can benefit from a drug-free birth. Below is a list of the benefits that can be reaped from natural childbirth:
Childbirth is a beautiful thing. After the hours of labor, there is nothing more special than having the newly mother able to hold her child the minute after it’s born. It makes the pain that you had just experienced go away because all that matters in the world is that newborn child in your arms. During labor, every woman has her own experience but one common experience is the pain. According to Kitzinger (1978) “Labor pain can have negative or positive meaning, depending on whether the child is wanted, the interaction of the laboring woman with those attending her, her sense of ease or dis-ease in the environment provided for birth, her relationship with the father of her child and her attitude to her body throughout the reproductive
As I stated in my personal statement, I seriously considered midwifery when one of my older cousins became pregnant with her first child two years ago. It felt very rewarding being by her side, especially when sharing her happiness and anticipation during the later end of her pregnancy. I always felt a strong bond towards children and babies, me being the oldest of 7 siblings. I have felt maternal feelings and protective instincts even at a young age and even though I have yet to have children of my own. Further, I have realized that I tend to gravitate towards pregnant women, always wondering how far along they were, how well they were coping, and secretly rooting them on whenever I saw or met one. I am passionate about helping others and want to work in the health field. I have done some research to gain further insight into the roles of midwives through watching documentary films such as “The Midwives” and reading midwifery journals. I learnt about the importance of midwives and their responsibility in caring for and supporting pregnant women and their whānau throughout their pregnancy as well as post pregnancy. The partnership midwives have with pregnant women in preparing women for motherhood inspires me. I truly see myself working as a midwife for the rest of my life and would love the opportunity to study midwifery at AUT. This will enable me to achieve my aspirations and launch me into my career as a midwife, something that I am very
This essay examines the reasons why I want to pursue a career in midwifery. I want to be a midwife because I believe that I would enjoy helping people, specifically women, as they progress from pregnancy to child birth and then finally the post-natal stage. The qualities that I bring to the midwifery profession include being able to work well under pressure and the ability to work with different types of people; for example, working in a Rest Home (Alexander House) with their residents, fellow workers and Nurses.
