Chapter 1: Childhood Obesity – A General Overview Childhood obesity is defined as a serious health condition that affects children and teenagers. This condition takes place when a child’s weight is way above the normal for his or her height and age. This health condition is specifically worrisome since the extra pounds usually start children on the path to medical conditions that used to be confined with adults such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes. Obesity among children can also result to depression and poor self esteem. One of the most effective methods to lower the incidence of childhood obesity is to improve the exercise habit and diet of the whole family. Children get tired of the usual taste, which is the reason why kids usually only consume half of their main course and yet still want to eat pudding. Kids just simply get bored with the main course. Diet Advice No. 2: Stay away from using foods as a form of reward. Using foods as a reward simply makes certain types of foods to be desirable while some less desirable. In other terms, telling kids they can eat some chocolates or candies if they eat vegetables simply makes chocolates and sweets more appealing and the vegetables less alluring. Diet Advice No. 3: Get your kids involved during mealtime. In particular, younger children are less likely to consume something that they have prepared themselves so let them help you prepare healthy meals such as sandwiches, smoothies, whole meal scones, fruit muffins, homemade burgers and fishcakes.
