The Valdivia Earthquake occurred on the 22nd of May 1960 in Valdivia, Chile. It is the most powerful earthquake ever recorded with a magnitude of 9.5. The earthquake resulted in many natural disasters not only in other parts of Chile but in other countries as well. A sequence of strong earthquakes hit the country of Chile between 21st of May and the 6th of June with first recording was the Conception Earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 on the Richter scale. Then the most powerful of them, the Valdivia earthquake hit; affecting all of Chile more than 400,000 square kilometers with devastation point in magnitude between 9.4 and 9.6 on the Richter scale. The United States Geological Survey would later confirm that the magnitude of the earthquake …show more content…
Most of the boats had people in them and when the boats sank by the tsunami, life were taken along with it. The tsunamis also cause small amounts of flooding in some areas of Chile but not severely. All the while, a huge series of tsunami occurred throughout a portion of the Pacific Ocean. These tsunamis devastated parts of Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and the Philippines. Hawaii had more effect than the other countries because its off the coast of the U.S. The small town of Hilo suffered the worse from the other parts of Hawaii. The tsunami that hit Hilo cause severe damage, some of 600 acres and the estimate cost of damage was $23.5 million. Some parts of Hawaii have also sustained the effects of the tsunami which tally up to over $100 million in damages. Others have either only received minor amounts. of damages, at least 250,000. Along the coast of California, the largest wave height measured at 1.7 meters caused so much damage and the loss of so many vessels. The wave hit most Southern California with the majority being piers and harbors. Major damaged occurred along the Los Angeles and Long Beach harbors. 300 small craft were adrift and 30 of them sunk include a 24-meter yacht which had crashing resulting in the sinking. 235 boat landings ships were lost at sea while and 110 were destroyed from …show more content…
Most landslides occurred on the forested mountain slopes around the Liquine-Ofqui Fault. The landslides cause any fatalities nor significate economic damage due to being uninhabited. However, one landslide caused destruction and alarm following the blockage of the outflow of Rinihue Lake. The water level of the lake quickly rises, causing floods near other lakes and towns. About 100 km (62 mi) south of the Rinihue Lake, landslides in the mountains around Golgol River cause the river to dam up; when the dam burst it create a flood down the Puyehue Lake. The Golgol landslides destroyed many routes include Route 215-CH which connects to Bariloche in Argentina. On 22nd of May, Cordon Caulle erupted just 38 hours of the Great Chilean Earthquake. While the volcano did erupt, people were too occupied with the serve damage caused by the
On August 24, 2014 a magnitude 6.0 earthquake occurred in and around the city of Napa, CA. The earthquake killed one person and injured over 150 people. And these people were treated at Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa [1]. More and more earthquakes occurred on this earth. So this grasps people’s attention.
The Loma Prieta earthquake was one of the most destructive earthquakes in California history. The Loma Prieta earthquake happened on Tuesday, October 17, 1989, at 5:04 pm. It was a 6.9 magnitude earthquake on the Richter Scale. It lasted approximately 15 seconds. The epicenter of this massive earthquake was located in the forest of the Nisene Marks State Park, near Loma Prieta peak in the Santa Cruz mountains. The epicenter is approximately 60 miles south of the big town of San Francisco. Loma Prieta was triggered by a slip along the famous San Andreas Fault. Also, the quake caused damage
The 9th of February 1971 an earthquake occurred in the lower parts of the San Gabriel Mountains in southern California. The San Fernando earthquake was measured to have a magnitude of around 6.5, which caused severe damage to buildings and major freeways in the Los Angeles area. Two huge health care buildings in San Fernando caused the majority of deaths when they collapsed at both sides. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the mountains and the most severe damages occurred in northern San Fernando Valley. However, the event impacted other densely populated areas in Los Angeles and caused huge difficulty for transportation as a result of failure in several roadways and freeway interchanges.
On Friday March 11th, 2011 at 2:46 pm, the fifth largest earthquake recorded since 1900 with a magnitude of 9.0, 1.7 Richter scale points greater than the devastating Vancouver Island earthquake of 1946, struck the coast of Japan, 231 miles northeast of Tokyo1, causing a devastating regional and global catastrophe.
The earthquake in Borah Peak, Idaho occurred on October 28th 1983. According to USGS’s website it marked as the largest earthquake recorded in Idaho by magnitude as well as in terms of damage. Caused by an impressive surface fault ranging about 34 kilometer long not associated with a plate boundary, the earthquake was assigned an intensive to IX due to the surface faulting but only ranked at a 6.9 on the Richter Scale. The biggest area of breakage occurred in an 8 kilometer crack between West Spring and Cedar Creek (USGS website).
Breaking news on Fox today, It is May 20,1960 and the ground is shaking. Scientists are saying one of the biggest quakes in the 20th century now happening in Valdivia located in southern Chile. The magnitude, how vast the size of something is, in this case the earthquake was 9.5 and great damage is reported. Now, we are reporting from the remains of the city and are not sure if there is going to be an aftershock, which is an earthquake that occurs after a larger earthquake in the same area. I am your news reporter Dasha Krumer and today I am with Shreya Srihari an expert on earthquakes a seismologist.
Puerto Rico fell victim to an earthquake on 11 October 1918 that measured 7.5 on the Richter Scale. The earthquake was followed by a tsunami that came bearing down on the Puerto Rican coast with a wall of water that was estimated at approximately six feet high. This disaster claimed the lives of 116 people. These events have been attributed to the Puerto Rico Trench.
These earthquakes were followed on Sunday, November 1, 1755, by a cataclysmic shock and tsunami that killed an estimated 70,000 people, leveling the city of Lisbon, Portugal, while many of its residents were in church. This event marks the beginning of the modern era of seismology, prompting numerous studies into the effects, locations, and timing of earthquakes.
In 2010, an 8.8 Mw earthquake shook Chile. It was approximately 200 miles southwest of Chile and was approximately 375 miles long. A 2014 study attributed the quake to immense water pressure located between the two plates. The region was stricken by strong aftershocks for months after the quake, many of a magnitude of 5.0 Mw or greater.
The Chilean earthquake was the earth’s biggest earthquake ever recorded in the twentieth century. This earthquake took place near Valdivia, southern Chile, on May 22, 1960. The magnitude (the measurement of the peak of the movement) recorded by a seismograph (a device used to find and record vibrations that comes from an earthquake) was 9.5. It is possible that other earthquakes were larger; however, the Chilean Earthquake is the largest earthquake since precise estimates of magnitude were made possible in the early 1900s.
The Chiapas Earthquake, otherwise known as the Southern Mexico earthquake, had catastrophic results on Mexico as a whole. The disaster struck off the coast of Chiapas, Mexico 11:49 on Thursday, September 7, 2017. The tremors from this disaster was felt all the way in Mexico City, nearly 600 miles away, and the aftershocks continued all through Friday, leaving victims on edge and terrified.
According to the records of earthquake intensity, this is the strongest earthquake occurred in Japan and one of the most powerful earthquakes in the world ( ). When the Pacific land crashed down and the North American land slide up, the resulting of landslide and outburst of the bottom turn to create earthquake in the Pacific Ocean, and it was the biggest impact in 1200 years. Furthermore, the earthquake occurred from 130 kilometer east of the city of Honshu, Japan on March 11, 2011, and the main shock lasted for 40 minutes. The earthquake created magnitude scale to 9.0 Mw, and 165-foot movement occurred to the seafloor during the earthquake ( ). Moreover, at that time, most city of Japanese affected by that earthquake, and a nuclear power industry is one of the victims which was crashed by the earthquake. Because of that, it release of radiation to large area not only in Japan but also get oversea to another country such as China, Viet
