The Valdivia Earthquake occurred on the 22nd of May 1960 in Valdivia, Chile. It is the most powerful earthquake ever recorded with a magnitude of 9.5. The earthquake resulted in many natural disasters not only in other parts of Chile but in other countries as well. A sequence of strong earthquakes hit the country of Chile between 21st of May and the 6th of June with first recording was the Conception Earthquake with a magnitude of 8.1 on the Richter scale. Then the most powerful of them, the Valdivia earthquake hit; affecting all of Chile more than 400,000 square kilometers with devastation point in magnitude between 9.4 and 9.6 on the Richter scale. Most of the boats had people in them and when the boats sank by the tsunami, life were taken along with it. The tsunamis also cause small amounts of flooding in some areas of Chile but not severely. All the while, a huge series of tsunami occurred throughout a portion of the Pacific Ocean. These tsunamis devastated parts of Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and the Philippines. Hawaii had more effect than the other countries because its off the coast of the U.S. The small town of Hilo suffered the worse from the other parts of Hawaii. The tsunami that hit Hilo cause severe damage, some of 600 acres and the estimate cost of damage was $23.5 million. Some parts of Hawaii have also sustained the effects of the tsunami which tally up to over $100 million in damages. Others have either only received minor amounts. of damages, at least 250,000. Along the coast of California, the largest wave height measured at 1.7 meters caused so much damage and the loss of so many vessels. The wave hit most Southern California with the majority being piers and harbors. Most landslides occurred on the forested mountain slopes around the Liquine-Ofqui Fault. The landslides cause any fatalities nor significate economic damage due to being uninhabited. However, one landslide caused destruction and alarm following the blockage of the outflow of Rinihue Lake. The water level of the lake quickly rises, causing floods near other lakes and towns. About 100 km (62 mi) south of the Rinihue Lake, landslides in the mountains around Golgol River cause the river to dam up; when the dam burst it create a flood down the Puyehue Lake.
