American Gangster tells a story about how the emerge of drug traffic and trade was in the streets of Harlem, New York. Denzel Washington plays real life gangster- Frank Lucas back in the 70s that was originally from North Carolina.

This week's movie is Chinatown by Roman Polanski. This movie in short follows this private investigator J.J. Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) who is hired by the wife of the chief engineer of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. At first, the person who hires him is a facade to the real wife of the chief engineer. The original intentional for hiring him was to find out if the chief engineer was having an extramarital affairs with someone else; he was not. As time goes on, the plot thickens with the chief engineer mysterious dying from a supposed suicide. Yet, undeterred J.J took it upon himself with the help of the actual chief engineer wife Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway) to find out who murder the chief engineer and other saddening things related to deceit, corruption, and murder. The actions committed by J.J. are in some ways a heroic in one form and in others the exact opposite where in turn it caused a fiasco of events. Some of the ways the directors shows this is through the dramatic terms of close up shots, pans, and crane shots. Chinatown by Roman Polanski uses the dramatic elements of close up shots, pans, and crane shots to show J.J. Jake Gittes as an antihero.

In the book The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, it's built around the class division between the Socs and the greasers. The kids in the Socs came from privileged and wealthy families while the greaser grew up in a unstable and poor environment, and it shaped who they are and how they act. American Hustle is a movie that attempted to portray the Abscam Sting of 1978. This name was given to an FBI operation that involved seven members of Congress. The FBI lured public officials into accepting bribes and was given the name “Abscam” because it refers to Abdul Enterprises. The FBI agents were undercover as Arab business men and convicted all seven congress members of accepting bribes. Hollywood does not accurately depict the way Sydney Prosser was portrayed and involved in the operation, how Rosalyn was portrayed, the involvement of the FBI, the Abscam Sting of 1978, and the inclusion of the on-screen message “Some of this actually happened”.

Ang Lee’s Crouching tiger Hidden Dragon is probably one of the most successful foreign films to ever be screened in America. Being the number one film of the year in 2000. On the other hand it was reportedly considered a flop in China. While it was influenced by American film styles, it still kept true to many aspects of its Chinese film heritage. With very apparent love story, it lacked the Extreme amount of Kung Fu fight scenes eastern audiences have come to enjoy. This is a stunning love story between a monk and widow. While it does have its share of over the top fight scenes, when you start to dig deeper the films many social implications become apparent. With ties to subjects such as religion, martial arts, philosophy, love, and even gender issues. This film is a representation of the modern era and how long practiced traditions are being challenged. Each character and plot line allows a glimpse into the Social and Traditional understanding of a culture.

The gangster movie genre is one of the most popular among the modern movies and some of the best film directors have produced some very excellent gangster movies. For my first film analysis, I decided to analyze my favorite gangster movie of all time. The movie that I analyzed is called “Scarface” and is directed by Brian De Palma. It was released in 1983 and is still a super hit movie today. Let me go through a short summary of the movie.

     For the following analysis, I will be discussing the movie Fight Club’s two main characters. They are “Jack” played by Edward Norton, and Tyler Durden played by Brad Pitt.
