Chinatown
Chinatown is a film that was released in the United States in 1974. The film was directed by Roman Polanski and he takes a closer look at the other side of the American Dream. The film presents the unsuccessful efforts of individuals when they are faced with challenges that exceed their abilities. The film portrays Chinatown as a place where high levels of corruption and deception occurs and the powerful controls important resources something that threatens the existence of the less fortunate in the society. To clearly bring out this message, the film uses symbols, metaphors, and motifs and the following is an analysis of how Chinatown has been used as a metaphor and the symbol of vision as well as how water has been used as a motif.

Water is very important element in a human’s life and water can either be used to sustain life through its consumption or end a life through drowning. Mr. Mulwray first refuses to authorize the construction of a new dam and losses his life in the process. Noah Cross uses his connections with the department of water and power to create artificial drought with the view of making the residents and leaders understand that the building of a new dam is necessary (Tonymacklin.net.). Since, the drought is artificial the additional water provided by the dam will not be needed for consumption and therefore will be used for irrigation purposes. Cross buys land in the surrounding areas while intimidating those who refuse to sell their land through poisonous wells and exploded water tanks.
Mr. Mulwray refuses to authorize the construction of a new water supply that he believes is a better choice but he loses his life which is in line with the firms narrative that an attempt to
do any good causes more harm (Gimel, 165). The residents lose their land for irrigation to
The answer to our drought will not be solved in a short amount of time, as a complex issue such as this requires long-term thinking. The state needs to update the water capture delivery systems and fix the groundwater problem due to a lack of regulation.
So it’s not unlike having several straws in a glass, and everyone drinking at the same time, and no one really watching the level.” (Source 3). The farmers are always drilling the groundwater and the citizens get stuck with whatever is left. The farmers are more worried about the economy and their crops. It really isn’t fair if the farmers acquire almost all the water and the people don’t. We need water for almost everything. We can’t just be wearing dirty clothes or be smelling very repetitive everyday. If we also don’t take showers, we can receive illnesses and become really
While classic film noir is characterized by high compositional tension, or low lit black and white cinematography, Polanski managed to infuse Chinatown with that sense of corruption and nihilism so prevalent in noir in bright Southern California despite employing a photographic element previously thought antithetical to film noir style: color film stock. The dominant colors of Chinatown are brown, gray, and black, which can be seen as an indication of the film’s allusion to the noir tradition of black-and-white. The various hues of brown and gold can be seen throughout the film, from clothing to homes
It was a blistering summer day and it was so hot you could fry eggs on the sidewalk. I remember the day as clearly as if it happenned yesterday. The water ninjas were prowling the streets. Mocking undercover espionage and often anonymous, they secretly watch you, snapping away photos of all your wastefulness with their iPhones. Then uploading the evidence for the world to see – and the newly empowered local Glendale water agency – to blatantly see. Within five minutes of me starting to wash my car, I look behind me and there were the water district people. They did the whole calling me “mam” cliche and asking whether I knew the laws. In the end, they wrote me up a citation for using water on a non watering day. This is just an example of an incident that can occur when excess watering occurs. Luckily for me I managed to get out of the citation for being a first time offender and promising not to do it again. Many of the conventional beliefs have laid blame on the homeowners hooked on having the shiny clean cars, crisp green lawns, and sparkling swimming pools. However, the conventional beliefs don’t always tell the whole story. The truth is California communities all across the state have tremendously reduced their average water consumption. There have been both successes and failures in the fronts of California’s drought and the conservation efforts, but as we go forward there is a definite need in better planning.
California is known for its vast production of agriculture; having some of the most fertile soil on Earth, a 4-year drought is not what California wants. The lack of water in California has had dramatic effects within the state. In fact California’s governor, Jerry Brown, has declared it a state of emergency. A drought is a serious weather condition in which many people and the environment is entirely affected. A drought is essentially a difference in the amount of water in a region and the amount of water that the people and the environment in that region needs (Mann et al. 2015). The definition of a drought varies throughout regions depending on the amount of water each region receives and needs. The time limit to announce a drought also
Imagine having to go outside every time one needs to use the restroom. There has been a drought going on in California for the past four years. There is a feud for water between farmers, citizens, and the drillers who get drain the water. The drought is a damaging issue that is affecting the lives of many. Therefore, California’s government should pass laws to manage how aquifers are to be properly used.
California suffered the driest year in its recorded history in 2013 (Erdman, 2014). In January of 2014 Governor Jerry Brown identified the drought as a State of Emergency for California and asked that all state officials take actions to help the communities hit the hardest and asked all Californians to cut their water usage by at least 20 percent (Governor Brown Signs Drought Legislation, 2014). The governor and lawmakers in California put together a relief program that gives 687 million in relief to help with the drought and fund conservation improvement, irrigation efficiency and clean up for contaminated groundwater (Governor Brown Signs Drought Legislation, 2014).
“Drought can best be thought of as a condition of water shortage for a particular user in a particular location” (DWR). Although droughts seem to come unexpectedly they actually form over a long period of time with most of their effects being felt by those dependent on annual rainfall. The Department of Water Resources explains that water reservoirs and groundwater basins are buffers for drought impacts and the drought will not be considered over until these storages have been fully replenished. In the past, California’s “significant multi-year droughts have been ended by an above-average water year where statewide precipitation was in the range of 150 percent average.” (DWR) Recently, California has experienced several consecutive years where rainfall and snowfall were well below average. This problem is important because the lack of precipitation means the state is compelled to
In recent years, California’s water shortage has been an issue and in 2014 an alarming driest historical year has impacted the state in different ways. Because of the lack of rainfall and snow, California’s reservoirs are running insignificant water basins below their capacity. While water shortages are experienced slowly and throughout a length of time, the harshest impacts are noticeable in areas that produce California’s food where wells are used as resource for water in agriculture, and residential areas. Though, most agree the drought is an issue some do not agree. To understand the circumstances, this paper will look at the drought’s impacts on California’s economy for agricultural, famers, and consumers. Also, this written work will examine the environmental consequences of surface water obtainability, and the areas that have encounter the most devastating affects. For most, this paper will examine the allocations of the governor’s drought declaration, and the strategies used by residents to conserver water.
The present drought is alarming to residents in California especially those in the agriculture sphere of the world’s seventh largest economy. At the current state, the water system has been overwhelmed throughout the state by the change in climate, increased industrial agriculture and water-rich consumption that has had nearly no restrictions until recently.
Actually, only one percent of the world's water has the capability of being used by us. About ninety-seven percent is salty seawater, and two percent is frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps. That only leaves one percent of the precious water that is to be used by not only people, but used by animals, plants, and food. Dehydration, which is the lack of water, will kill us faster than starvation, which is the lack of food. Since the plants and
The short story takes place in Vancouver, British Columbia. Sek-Lung’s family resides in Chinatown, a neighborhood where the alleys are
The town was closely washed by a patrol of the police. A majority of the women who lived in Chinatown were not married to any of the men. Then the children, being so young, were incapable of of making anything for themselves beside what they made from Mott Street. It is terrible that many of the children were abused, and the police simply let it happen and did nothing about it to help fix or prevent it from happening again. One young girl was fired from the store she worked at and she ended up working in a laundromat in Chinatown. The idea of a young girl working to just feed herself is unimaginable and would never be thought to happen in today’s time. Another instance was a woman was being beaten to death by her husband. There was a police officer seeing it all happen and he did nothing to help or stop it. The police officer’s excuse for not doing anything was he did not like the woman; he just shrugged his shoulders and just went on his day like none of it had ever even happened. It was very difficult to figure out who had done what during those times because many many people kept quiet and to themselves. No one ratted one another out for they feared that something bad would happen to them or their families (Riis Chapter
Roman Polanski's 1974 film, 'Chinatown', revolutionized the film noir genre. Aside from the absense of voice-over, the film shares all the same characteristics with earlier noirs. That is, of course, except for the fact that ?Chinatown? is
In recent years there has been so much talk and propaganda regarding the ongoing in drought in California. Scholars argue when the exact start of the drought was, but I believe that it started in 2007 because rainfall has fallen below average since then. Droughts occur because the quantity demanded of water does not meet the quantity supplied which leads to a shortage. The drought has impacted not only everyone in the state, but also the ecosystem. While there are many reasons why there is a shortage of water in California; today I will touch on three of them, the lack of precipitation, increase in population, and wasteful water use. In my research I will report on these three reasons and look at possible solutions for this most recent dismal event in California.
