Choosing life over death, kindness over killing. It’s simple really. Practice what you preach. However, to most it is viewed as extreme, somewhat ridiculous? What I believe is extreme is consuming decomposing flesh and pretending to embrace peace while we make violence, suffering, torture and death a daily part of our lives. Eating fruits and veggies… extreme? Not so much. I believe it comes down to compassion. The basic concept that most people have been taught since birth. As Arthur Schopenhauer says ‘compassion is the basis of morality’. In its simplest form it is just kindness, at the least – respect. Yet all day we make choices that define us, our beliefs and morals, who we are what we support and whether or not we realise the enormity of these decisions, they all have ethical implications for which we are accountable. My decision is veganism. In recent times the popularity of veganism has risen greatly, but so has the negative views surrounding it. In the articles ‘Do animal lovers need to be vegan?’ (Telegraph UK, Peter Wedderburn, 11 Aug 2015) and ‘Meat is more than just dead animals’ (Peter Schaller, Feb 14, 2015), the concept of veganism is discussed in regards to compassion. In this article I will discuss the three reasons why I believe true kindness and compassion means omitting all animal products from your life.
