What is a hero? Philip Zimbardo, in his article Transforming Society by Teaching Everyday People the Characteristics of a Modern Hero states it best “a hero displays certain characteristics such as integrity, compassion, and moral courage, heightened by an understanding of the power of the situational forces, an enhanced social awareness, and an abiding commitment to social action.” The term hero is commonly thought as someone with super powers. While yes, the comic book characters are heroes in the sense they fight crime, stop villains, and save the day with their charming character and super powers. The heroes that are mentioned ordinary people. They are people with great influence in their communities; such as Chris Long of the Philadelphia Eagles, and his stand for better education in the cities he has played. He has donated his paychecks for educational equality in the cities that he has played for, St. Louis, New England, and Philadelphia and started a scholarship fund in his hometown of Charlottesville, NC. Also in a combined effort he partnered with Malcolm Jenkins and Torrey Smith to stand up for racial equality. The current state of American Society between people of color and police is very divided. He had been the first white professional athlete to participate in the national anthem protest by placing his arm around his teammate Malcolm Jenkins to show support. This protest shed light on the racial and social injustices that is occuring in America. In an teammate Malcolm Jenkins had stated “more white men need to position themselves as allies when we’re talking about conversations dealing with social equality, social justice”, this was in response to Long’s impactful participation in the protest. Touching back on Zimbardo’s definition to hero Long is a perfect example. He understood his situation and displayed all of the signs of a proper
Heroes come in different shapes, sizes, and looks. Maybe someone you saw on the street one day was heroic for saving someone’s life in a car accident. A hero to me is someone who can be brave in situations that aren’t so safe, and take a risk to make sure everyone is okay, no matter who
Everyone has their own idea of what a hero is and what a hero does. Most people think that guys like superman and batman are heroes because they have incredible superpowers and they are famous people who receive glory. Many people describe heroes as strong and indestructible people, however, heroes are actually not always famous and they are not always the way that society portrays them. In fact, most heroes are ordinary people who do extraordinary things and have notable traits for society to follow. Although heroes are mostly overlooked or misinterpreted by many people, a hero is always a courageous, selfless, and persistent person who has the determination to create change for the better.
Heroes are so much more than people that fly around in capes and fight off villains, heroes can be everyday people that just want to help. Take the movie Hacksaw Ridge for example. In the movie there is a character named Desmond T. Doss, Desmond decides to join the army during WWII as an Army Medic but not only does he want to join the army but he refuses to carry a gun do to his religious beliefs. At first the Army would not let him join unless he used a gun because they all thought he was crazy and did not know how he was going to survive.
“Heroes represent the best of ourselves, respecting that we are human beings. A hero can be anyone from Gandhi to your classroom teacher, anyone who can show courage when faced with a problem. A hero is someone who is willing to help others in his or her best capacity.” (Ricky Martin). Being a hero can shape a community as a whole, some people can make a positive impacts but somehow the hero's might not even be recognized and be unscathed of any praise. But also some people consider others heros but do not fit in necessary . A hero is someone who influences makes a positive impact on a person or community.
“It’s not true that there are no heroes anymore…” (Oliver Stone SB 63) Heroes. Today when we hear heroes we think of superheroes with powers. but have we really thought what heroes really are? Heroes are your regular everyday people that work to the best of their abilities to make a difference in the world. A hero is not someone who thinks about themselves but someone who does things that they believe are right and are admired or idealized for their courage.
What is a hero? You may think a hero is someone who saves the world like Superman or Batman, but a hero is a lot more then that. People like Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King Jr. are the real heroes, that we should look up to, not the superheroes that we see on movies. They're the ones who made the world a better place to live on.
When you think of heroes, you might think of Superman or someone like Batman. In reality heroes don't wear costumes. A hero is a person who does their best to accomplish something that can help people weather that is mentally or physically. Anyone can be a hero no matter what. Heroes are not classified by their age, gender, race, religion, or where they come from.
A hero in modern terms can be defined as someone who is admired or idealized for their courage, achievements, or qualities. In addition to these characteristics heroes are people with a skills, intelligence,
Heroes are defined differently depending on who you are asking. Heroes are based on backgrounds, families, perspectives, and so much more. Based on what I have witnessed and been through, I believe a hero is someone who positively makes a difference in the lives of others through their actions and experiences. Heroes are supposed to make us feel safer and are supposed to make us feel better about ourselves. A hero is supposed to overcome difficult situations and help everyone believe that anything is possible. Bo Meagher is my hero of Scott County. Bo is someone who has overcome obstacles and cancer, when he couldn’t do much about his condition.
There are many interpretations of what describes a hero and the actions they take. Whether it's selfless individuals that protect others against harmful entities or powerful figures in costumes that depict moral greatness and power fantasies, everyone has their own vision of what constitutes a hero. Like many of our own thoughts and opinions, these visions often stem from the environment and upbringing of the people that have them. A fantastic example of this aspect of our thoughts is the way George Orwell described a hero. He views a hero as someone who will do whatever they can to change social systems that lack respect for human decency, even if they know it is impossible to create such change.
Some people think that the only heroes are the ones who are from movies or comics with extreme skill. But heroes can actually be ordinary people. For example, A hero is a person who is willing to help and is dedicated to their cause, but normally look like ordinary people, but proves they are a hero with their actions.
What is a hero? A hero is not somebody with the ability to fly, run really fast, or control other people's minds,... A hero is a random person that rises to the occasion and performs the action(s) of superhero proportions. “The only use of an obstacle is to be overcome. All that an obstacle does with brave men is, not to frighten them, but to challenge them.” (Woodrow Wilson). I agree with Woodrow that to be truly heroic, one must have leaderships, bravery, intelligence,... to solve common problems in our society. There are many examples of heroes in our modern day world as well as fictional characters. For instances, Odysseus in the Odyssey, Bilbo Baggins in the Hobbit and my mom have those characteristics of heroism.
To numerous people a hero is a person with supernatural gifts and great gallantry. It is someone that would save lives and help make the world a better place like Superman for example. A list of these mainstream heroes can extended a mile long, however, that is not the case in reality. Real world heroes are seen much differently from fictional characters. People are labeled heroes based on two words: positive impact.
All heroes are not fictional characters that have extraordinary or superhuman powers. A hero to me is a skillful or successful person who can motivate me and bring my confidence to the next level even through my down falls. A super hero in my eyes does not have any powers although you might think they do but it’s always their determination and focus that makes me believe heroes have super powers. Now that I have given you an idea of a hero to me, I can now move on to explain different types of heroes.
When the word "hero" is spoken, everyone has different thoughts. Some will think of super powers like flying and saving people from villains; while others have a certain person they know or have heard of that come to mind who have done something to make a difference in the lives of others but who is a hero to you? To answer this question you must first ask yourself what a hero is; what comes to your mind when someone says the word. When I am confronted with these questions I always have the same thoughts; smart, strong will power, and someone who stands up for what they believe is right.
