Liberty University Abstract The book, Christian Coaching; Helping Others Turn Potential Into Reality, is written by Gary Collins. In this book, he states how coaching is different from counseling, discipleship, and mentoring. Christian Coaching is getting the individual out from where they currently are to a place that God wants them to be. Collins illustrates this throughout his book the importance coaches play in individual’s lives by encouraging, listening, and guiding them to where they want to be. Christian Coaching is different than secular coaching in that it takes a person from where they currently are to a place that God wants them to be in reflecting the image of Christ. Christian Coaching also enables the individual to find God’s plan for their lives and learn how to live accordingly by the use of stories, insights, and interviews during the coaching sessions. This book is important to have in one’s library because it gives a broader scope and a God-centered approach to help people move towards the future and apply the gifts that God has given to them. Summary What is coaching? According to Collins (2009), coaching is about getting a person from being stuck in their current position in life, developing and reaching goals that one sets, being able to manage conflict in an effective manner, being able to get through life transitions, being able to clarify one’s vision, and building rapport with others.
Coaching: helping another person to improve awareness, to set and achieve goals in order to improve a particular behavioural performance.
Coaching can take many forms, life coaching, business coaching, performance coaching etc. As with mentoring and counselling it is about helping the individual to gain self awareness, but it is goal focused and action is required so that the individual can move forward. The goal setting process has two components: skill development and psychological development. The outcome sought is that the "coachee" will achieve the goals set, and
I think it is safe to say that the coach has several roles to perform; with the main objective being to develop the person being coached. This can be achieved by increasing self-confidence, identifying relevant and suitable topics for coaching as well as agreeing the setting of suitable planned tasks to support the learning process.
I find this an excellent definition & explanation of what coaching is because to me coaching is about facilitating others to find their own paths through life, assisting them to reach their own answers & way forward by using open questioning, active listening & feeding back,
Coaching is a useful way to develop people’s skills and abilities, and of boosting performance. It can also help deal with issues and challenges before they become major problems. Coaching typically begins with a personal interview with the employee to assess the situation, review current opportunities and challenges. After the interview, priorities for action are established along with specific desired outcomes. Individuals may also be asked to complete specific action items in a certain period of time that support the achievement of desired goals. Resources may also be provided such as articles, checklists and assessments.
At this stage in life, we embrace the seasons in our life that God uses to help our growth, and this book, as well as the relationship with God, can prepare me to become a successful coach. As Collins, mentions in his book the art of Christian coaching practice involves working with an individual or group in the process of moving from where they are to where God wants them to be (Collins, 2009). It is important to realize that being a successful Christian coach means that the client or group being coach has guided in the path that allows them to achieve successfully a God giving the
A coach of any kink is important for any team to run and function in an appropriate manner. They keep the team in good condition, ready for the next task, and how to have an open mind about anything that comes their way. Coaches need to be flexible and be able to move things around as things and people change daily. Coaches are leaders and have the potential to inspire many people they come in contact with. With the right coach people and teams can get many things accomplished in a fast and appropriate manner. This is a skill many employers look for.
Finally, I would use all these examples of coaching in my own coaching. The thing that means the most to me in coaching is this: 1) Be me, listen thoroughly without interruption or daydreaming. 2) Master the art of critical thinking questions that help guide the client to look inwardly to discover the answer that is right for them, not me. 3) Empower them with positive reinforcement. 4) Love them like Jesus
A Coach is somebody who develops, improves or promotes changes in a persons ability and understanding. Coaches work with another person or a group of people and develops them as people using sport to progress them in their development. All coaches have certain responsibilities towards performers, their sport, their profession and themselves. Below I have identified what a coach may be required to fulfil.
It is important to develop a biblically based theory of Christian counseling that integrates psychology, spirituality, and theology. This model must be flexible enough to incorporate non-believers, while attempting to gently facilitate a personal relationship with God in both believers and non-believers alike. It is the author’s intent to develop an integrative theory by using techniques proved valid by science, in conjunction with theological truth. This integrated approach will take into account personality structure, motivation, development, and worldview to devise a plan of change for clients. This process
There are a number of definitions to what coaching is; I feel that I can personally relate to the following definition:
What is coaching – “The coach works with the clients to achieve a speedy, increased and sustainable effectiveness in their lives and careers through focused learning. The coach’s sole aim is to work with the client to achieve all of the client’s potential-as defined by the client” The Coaching Manual Starr, J 2008.
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How
Coaching is the art of facilitating another person’s learning, development and performance. Through coaching people are able to find their own solutions, develop their own skills and change their own behaviors and attitudes.
In this paper, the student-writer will discuss the methods that are taught in In Effective biblical counseling: A model for helping caring Christians become capable counselors by Crabb (1977). The student-writer will also use what is taught in this book with the skills that are expressed in Creating a Healthier Church; Family Systems Theory, Leadership, and congregational life by Richardson (1996) and Blessed Connections: Relationships that sustain vital ministry, by Schwanz (2008). The student-writer will compare and contrast the skills that are mentioned in these books to establish a well maintained way in which to ministry to clients, and meet their needs as a counselor.
