This chapter book, Christian coaching: Helping others turn potential into reality by Collins G. A (2009), talks about life coaching as a Christian. Also, what it takes to be a good coach. According to Collins (2009), “good coaching is helping another in the present so that he or she is self-motivated and equipped to do better in the future” (p. 28). Life coaching is coaching an individual on how to reach their potential in life. Guiding them through life transitions, and to goals that that they may have. However, in this book, Collins also explain how to coach them from a Christian perspective. Showing and guiding these individuals to be effective in life but being effective living in God’s purpose. In this book it gives different tools to
I think it is safe to say that the coach has several roles to perform; with the main objective being to develop the person being coached. This can be achieved by increasing self-confidence, identifying relevant and suitable topics for coaching as well as agreeing the setting of suitable planned tasks to support the learning process.
With the last few weeks of reading Gary Collins book on Christian Coaching and how it can be applied in many different ways on being able to help a person an application perspective would be in the higher education field. In this day in time there are many people who want advance in a career, have a career change, or gain an education to better themselves or their families. Working in the higher education field as a coach can be very beneficially in helping someone to reach their purpose. For an example, a person who been thinking about going back to school to get their degree in Bachelor of Science in Information Systems Technology because she has been working in the field for sixteen years and now she wants to advance in the company. To be
In conclusion, it is essential to recognize, that coaches encourage and assist the client(s) to construct better skills, vision, growth through life transitions, guide the client through their spiritual journey and speak the truth in love (Collins, 2009). Also, coaches will help people set goals and plan ways to reach these goals. In other words, when obstacles get in the way, coaches challenge, inspire, and give accountability so the individual (client) can overcome barriers and experience triumph. A Christian life coach is there for you, prayerfully listening to your concerns and making inquiries that will provide clarity on your circumstances, get you past your blocks, recognize your God-given potential, and challenge you to be your best. As a result of the partnership with the coach people, organizations, or churches can formulate a life-vision or life mission statements and makes those come truth.
I would love to share the information and life skills that I gathered from this book within the family setting as well as when coaching students and friends in life skills. I will use the book to illustrate to my clients how to create an understanding and balance in life by referring to the life and miracles of Jesus. This will help me to express the concept of love, passion, trust and understanding within my family and between my friends and clients as well as refer to the
Finally, I would use all these examples of coaching in my own coaching. The thing that means the most to me in coaching is this: 1) Be me, listen thoroughly without interruption or daydreaming. 2) Master the art of critical thinking questions that help guide the client to look inwardly to discover the answer that is right for them, not me. 3) Empower them with positive reinforcement. 4) Love them like Jesus
It is apparent that coaching has an enormous role in sustaining and creating well built workplaces and great organizations. Coaching is the process of assisting people develop their ability to think about things such as people, relationships, problems and their future. It is obvious that coaching helps people get through issues. Coaching helps people concentrate on the things they struggle on. Coaching helps them overcome those issues.
I find this an excellent definition & explanation of what coaching is because to me coaching is about facilitating others to find their own paths through life, assisting them to reach their own answers & way forward by using open questioning, active listening & feeding back,
There are a number of definitions to what coaching is; I feel that I can personally relate to the following definition:
Coaching is the art of facilitating another person’s learning, development and performance. Through coaching people are able to find their own solutions, develop their own skills and change their own behaviors and attitudes.
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching. Some questions would include: Why did he choose this as a profession? How did he get into coaching? What does one have to do to get a job as a coach? How
When someone experiences abuse it distorts not only their self-image but also their image of God. As Dr. Langberg explained in her lecture, victims of abuse struggle to bring together two, seemingly, irreconcilable things…God and abuse. One can believe in a world where there is a loving God and not abuse; or a world where there is abuse but there is no God. However, for a person who is abused to try to understand how a loving God can exist, yet still allow them to experience abuse seems incomprehensible. The person cannot deny the abuse they experienced, therefore their knowledge and image of God changes.
Throughout Collins’ writings, he emphasizes on the concept of moving forward towards a desired outcome. Collins believes true coaching allows the client to move out of, what seems like, a dead end. Collins (2009) states coaching addresses issues such as, “career development, developing and reaching corporate goals, betting relationships, transitioning through life, and clarifying visions” (Collins, 2009, p. 20). These goals are similar to those who consider themselves Christians. Collins defends the position that Christian coaching is a legitimate discipline because it helps guide Christ followers toward their goals through Christ (Collins, 2009). Collins (2009) draws on helping
Almost anyone can give you advice on what your next step in life will be. But, there are life coaches who can give you advice, help you create your future, and guide you with what you can do. For those interested in a career as a life coach, there are a few things that are necessary for you to possess and to do to become one. Here are ten of them:
Coaching can take many forms, life coaching, business coaching, performance coaching etc. As with mentoring and counselling it is about helping the individual to gain self awareness, but it is goal focused and action is required so that the individual can move forward. The goal setting process has two components: skill development and psychological development. The outcome sought is that the "coachee" will achieve the goals set, and
Little to no empirical data exist on the impact of life coaching and achieving goals (Grant, A. M.). Goals are critical factor when it comes to building long term success in life. This paper will address explaining the questioning strategy used to determine the goals of clients, describe challenges faced in the application of the skills learned and overcoming those challenges, describing client’s reaction to roadmap for success, and recommended resources and continuation of services for the client.
