There is a great disconnection between the Christian community and the mentally ill. The disconnection is shown in the way that the mentally ill is over looked or ignored. In some situations, some people believe the mentally ill have a type of disease that can be transmitted to them by simply being around the mentally ill person too often or being involved in the lives of the mentally ill person on a continual basis. Do people really believe that somehow they can become affected mentally by dealing with or living with people that have mental health issues? Some people feel that all mentally ill people are different and act so different that they don’t want to get the mentally ill person started with their allusions and strange reactions because they are just crazy and there is nothing that can be done by Christians to help them but to pray for them. People do not want to deal with anything that is different from them or deal with something or someone that they do not understand. People do not want to deal with new challenges or things that are different and or things that they do not …show more content…
What is normal in the United States is not necessarily accepted as normal in other countries and societies, and what is normal in other countries in many cases is not normal in the United States.
Measures of variables – The measurement of the various variables in mental health beliefs and acceptance are numerous and cannot be dealt with but there is a more focused attempt to cover a reasonable amount of information that will be clear as to the thoughts and approaches that need to occur to make a reasonable difference in the disconnection of Christians and the mentally ill. There is some significance of the Research because it shows some need for improvement in the relationship of Christians and the mentally
My program of study is obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Sociology. In this course I will be taking the some of the following classes, Marriage and family, Intro to Probability and Statistics, Intro to Social work, Christian Worldview, etc. Intro to Probability and Statistics studies different variables of probability, and distribution. I believe I will like this class because I want to study the reasoning of people’s actions.
The fourth common misconception is “If you loved Jesus more you would be happier.” The author compares this untruth as the Christian version of the common phrase “just try harder”. Loving Jesus would not stop a Christian from breaking their arm, the same as it would not stop someone from attaining depression. Jesus loves all people, even those who are ill. While the last mistruth is most likely the most debated saying, “You can’t be a Christian if you have a mental illness.” Saints in the church have fought with this for centuries. The article discusses the doubts and fears that people who suffer from mental illness go through. They believe God does not love them, because they are not perfect or their brain has a defect. The reality is Christians are humans who are broken, sick, and they need God’s healing just like everyone else. A lot of people dealing with mental health issues come to Christ to find support, love, and faith and conformation that it will get better. Both articles have excellent points, however, there is an opposite side of the
The three subtopics I am using was greatly incouraged by my pastor. After interviewing my pastor on how the Christian church affects the local community, he told me this is acheived through spiritual guidance, economic growth, charity, and interactive projects for criminals. I have found through my readings, and my pastor as well, Christ cares alot about the community, and is cncerned with it's welfare. The church is the light of the community, bringing hope, restoration, and guidance to the lost in many ways. I have many sources to support my subtopics, and I look forward to sharing how the church affects the local community in a powerful, inspirational, and positive way.
I believe that it is important to point out text like Matthew 4:3-11 that provides a new perspective that takes an emancipatory and inclusive approach to mental illness issues. I want to create a safe space that affirms that Jesus understands the particularities of all experiences, especially those considered the furthest away. In my home church, I would the bishop say that no matter how much sin one committed they could always come back to Christ and change their life. However, people who struggle with mental illness are not given that grace and opportunity to come to Jesus. They are often sat on the sidelines and ignored as if they are the modern
There seems to be a disconnection between society and those dealing with mental health issues. The only news that is really ever heard dealing with religion and the mentally ill seem to be extreme cases that cause people to become skeptical of those suffering from mental illness. Paloutzian (2017) states that it is “difficult to know what is going on inside someone else’s head, therefore we are left with attributions based on observed and verbal behavior” (p. 284). There is a fine line between figuring out if someone has a mental issue or whether their behavior has to do with religious attributes. Those claiming religious doctrines for their actions may be actually harming themselves due to the fact that they have a mental health issue.
Most of us have a deep and true desire to serve others. Whether it be the veteran without a home on the side of the road or protecting the sacred land that the Lord bestowed to us, as Catholics we are able to strengthen our connection with Christ though our service. As a Mater Dei student having been given the opportunity to experience different cultures, religions, and walks of life has molded me into a better person. Growing up in Orange County, I have always enjoyed a comfortable life within my community and church. For the longest, I believed that in order to be a good Christian one must attend weekly mass and recite their prayers every night, but I have quickly learned that it takes a lot more to be a disciple of God.
The city of God tells the story of teenager’s crime in the slums of Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, in different time stages from 1960s to 1980s. The director shows an area full of violence’s, sex, crimes, from Rocket’s perspective. Severe polarization of wealth, urban crime and youth gang are revealed in urban slum due to the globalizations of this city. This movie leads to people to consider two aspects of the issues from the movie. Those are the importance of education, and the influence of the environments.
Normality is a standard and the standard society has on relationships are unattainable considering all people are different.
physically as a group (Schlesinger). According to Evelyn Kallen “the family provides the most appropriate symbolic-expressive focus for ethnic identity expressed in terms of the idiom of kinship at the micro-community level” (). In addition, Jewish families are open-minded people because they have an egalitarian marital ideology; however, there is a sexual division of labor between domestic and occupational spheres. For instance the men are in occupations while the women’s duties are more over the household. Also they always emphasize on the nuclear family as oppose to extended family, mainly because they live in cities. The Jewish community in Canada went through a formative, maintenance and the actualization stage. Each stage reflects the
Larry Newman once said, “I don’t know how people can easily remain Christian if they get no fellowship. They may be able to do it intellectually, but part of the body of man is composed of spirit and parts of soul and flesh” (Julian 91). Biblical community is important to a Christian’s spiritual formation, emphasized in the 21st century through several methods, and is even mentioned in the Old and New Testament.
The movie City of God is a great film that’s directed by Fernando Meirelles and co-directed by Kátia Lund, and it’s based on a true story about honest urban issues in the developing nation of Brazil. This movie perfectly portrays the lack of social and economic mobility in the community and this leads to many problems, like urban slums and a horrible, dirty and run down physical environments. This then causes Urban crime and youth gang activity which causes kids to drop out of school and have no education. In the movie we see the lack of education and the effect it has on the community and the character’s own lives. With these slums and lack of government interference it leads to a constant cycle of poverty and run down and ruined communities
“God wants us to know that life is a series of beginnings, not endings. Just as graduations are not terminations, but commencements. Creation is an ongoing process, and when we create a perfect world where love and compassion are shared by all, suffering will cease” (Bernie Siegal). Coming to Southeastern, I never once thought about engaging my culture with the world around me. To teach others my Christian culture and how God is so powerful. I had this feeling inside that finally it was time for me to begin my journey in making a difference in someone else’s life. They might not have the same opportunity like I have had to experience and learn about Gods words. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the experience I had helping to change
Overall, the service felt like they were lecturing people and guiding them to live better lives. Actually, this could be related to Sigmund Freud’s theory on religion. It felt like all the people were treated as children, and according to Freud, through religion we are infants to God(s). Joachim Wach’s descriptive definition of religion can be found throughout the service I attended. In service, they read from the bible and that is the theoretical part of religion that communicates the belief system. Service required a gathering of people, so religion was sociological. During service, I witness recitation, sermon, sacramental rite, personal prayers, and song. Indeed, these met the criteria that religion requires doing something to get in touch
As a Christian, I believe that sociology is an important part of being able to spread the gospel to nonbelievers. If you do not understand society, then you cannot possibly think that you can adequately connect with others in society. So I would agree completely with most of this selection of reading. I agree specifically with the importance of cooperation between Sociology and Christianity. I would specifically agree more with the Horse and Carriage model. The importance of faith would make it the horse. I take this stance because I believe that you need faith more than anything. They have different goals and their points of focus are different. Something I would disagree with in this specific section of reading would be the view of the freezer treatment. You should never just stop investigating something just because it does not completely correlate with your beliefs. I personally believe that you should start investigating more. Too often in American society, people do not do their own research. They just follow what they are told and move on. I agree, however, with what
