Christianity and Catholic Church Essay

Having very traditional beliefs, the Catholic Church uses numerous different terms and practices that are not familiar with non-Catholics. Inside of the Discourse community, Catholics have set terms that are used widely to discuss different matters. For instances, the term “priest” is used to describe what others would typically call a “pastor.” In addition to the terms used, there are also rituals that are based on their traditional beliefs. The most drastic of them would be the Eucharist. This tradition is referred to by Catholics as “Holy Communion” and is referred to by protestants as “The Lord’s Supper.” Meg Kane described the differences by saying, “Catholics actually believe that the Eucharist is the body and blood of Christ. It has much more meaning behind it than other communion services.” (Kane). Drastically differing from other religions, Catholics believe that their priest was granted the ability by God to turn the bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

The religion my group is covering is Christianity. Christianity is one of the biggest and widest spread religions in the world. It was founded by Jesus Christ and his 12 Apostles. Jesus taught his Apostles the word of God and spread the belief that he was the messiah by performing miracles such as healing the sick, feeding thousands with only enough food for one person, and expelling demons from the souls of people he encountered. After Jesus had many followers, people started to worry about the change in the community and the Romans didn’t want to think about what might happen if people started changing their ways so they sentenced Jesus to death. Catholicism is one of the most recognized religions in the world. The most common misconception about Catholics is that practitioners are obsessed with rules and they judge people if they make mistakes. True Catholics see life from a different perspective, that of love, which has nothing to do with following a series of strict guidelines established by the church.

While it is true that both Protestantism and the Eastern Orthodox worship the same God, Roman Catholics differ by their own beliefs over certain matters. A person who follows Catholicism is called a “Roman Catholic” or simply a “Catholic”.

Religion is of most importance in the Chaldean community. As members of the Roman Catholic church, Chaldean follow the same rules and beliefs as other catholic. However, they have their own leader, and the ritual used in their mass and other ceremonies, are different from those practiced in western churches.

The Catholic Church is liturgical, which according to Catholic.com mean that they practice ceremonial worship, which makes mass an important part of the religion. During mass recitation is an important part of mass. The

Athanasius, a young man brought up in a pagan household, was taught to fear the Lord from a man named Alexander from a young age. Athanasius’ main opponent during his lifetime was to discount Arianism, a heresy that tried to propose the “subordination of the Son to the Father,” a view that outright “denied the eternal generation of the Son,” making Jesus less than God. The Arians believed that “the Father exists prior to the Son, since the Son is not eternal, that is, not timelessly self-subsistent” to the Father. This is to say that the Father does not eternally generate the Son, but instead came into being at a certain point in history, a blatant heresy that was corrected by Athanasius and the Church council in the 4th century.

The Catholics and Protestants were once together, therefore they are very similar but they do have a few differences. The Protestants believed that church services and the bible should be taught in a way that is legible to their people. Unlike the Protestants, the Catholics believe that it should be taught in its original form, even if they cannot understand the language. Church services with the Catholics remained in Latin, as it has in the last 1000 years (Alchin 2). The Catholics believed that their priest were special people.      Christianity is one of the major religions of mankind. It has been the dominant religion in Europe and America, Christianity has also spread throughout the world and has a greater number of adherents then any other religion.

Catholics differ from the bible through revelation with tradition and scriptures and how they complete each other. Catholics also preform practices that are not explicitly found in the bible. Catholics also believe in apostolic tradition.

To be Catholic means to be whole, one with community, rich in spiritual tradition. Catholicism is a lens or filter which provides a meaningful pattern to our experiences which otherwise would be lacking in life and interest. It is comprised up of faith, theologies, and many different doctrines; even ethical and spiritual orientations and behaviors. At the same time though, it is a community, a group of many strong willed people, with a particular history.

Christianity is the religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Most followers of Christianity, called Christians, are members of one of three major groups--Roman Catholic, Protestant, or Eastern Orthodox. These groups have different beliefs about Jesus and His teachings. But all consider Jesus central to their religion. Most Christians believe God sent Jesus into the world as the Savior. Christianity teaches that humanity can achieve salvation through Jesus.

Catholics incorporation their religion into everything since God created everything. The things one says, the things one do, and even one's thoughts are under God. Catholicism is not a once-in-a-while religion; it is everyday, 24-7 religion that a Catholic relates everything to. As every religion there are certain things that one must do in order to stay a Catholic. Everyday rituals include daily prayer, live a Christian life, and except the teaching of the church and of God. Being Catholic, one must go to mass every Sunday and holy day as part of the religion. Catholics must only eat one full meal during Ash Wednesday and sustain from meat on the Fridays during Lent which is part of the fasting and abstinence obligation of Catholicism. Lent lasts 40 days and 40 nights. They are to obey the laws of marriage in which the church carries as well as going to confession as much as needed.
