Most people think of Christopher Columbus as the person who discovered the Americas. However, Leif Ericson, a Viking, was the first European to see the Americas. “Christopher Columbus - born Cristoforo Colombo but was called in Spain Cristobal Colon”(Heat-Moon 4) was born to Domenico Colombo and Susanna Fontanarossa sometime between August 25 and October 31, 1451 in Italy near Genoa (Heat-Moon 4). “Christopher Columbus had four other siblings; Bartholomew Columbus, Bianchinetta Columbus, Giacomo Columbus, and Giovanni Pellegrino Columbus(Phillips 64). “Christopher spent some of his early years at his father’s trade of weaving and later he became a sailor on the Mediterranean [Sea]” (Christopher Columbus 2). “By the time he was 31 or 32, Christopher had become a master mariner in the Portuguese Merchant Service”(Christopher Columbus 2). Later in life, Columbus had married Doña Felipa Perestrello o Moníz (Heat-Moon 7). After eight years of persistence and 2 rejections from Portugal, Columbus was granted the finance needed to complete the voyage from Spain (Christopher Columbus 2). The reason that he wanted the money to finance the voyages was “he wanted to pioneer a new sea route to the ready riches of the Orient, and he wanted the wealth and recognition that would go with it (Heat-Moon 31). “On Aug. 3, 1492, Columbus sailed from Palos, Spain, with three small ships, the Santa Maria, commanded by Columbus himself, the Pinta under Martin Piñzon and Niña…
