Who was Christopher Columbus? Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who discovered the "New World". He discovered America on an expedition that was sponsored by the king of Spain, "King Ferdinana" in 1492. He was born in Genoa, Italy in the year of 1451. During his life he set out on many voyages trying to discover "New Land". On his first voyage in 1476 he nearly died when his ship was attacked by French Privateers, just off the coast of Portugal. He escaped death by fleeing the burning ship and swimming to land. Columbus had two sons. The first son named "Diego" was born in 1480 by his wife, and his second son Fernando was born from wedlock in 1488. Christopher Columbus was always coming up with plans to discover new land.
