Have you ever wondered what would have happened if Christopher Columbus would not have landed in America? America is home to millions of people today. But some of the things we use and do in our daily day to day lives can be traced back to the early colonization of the explorers. But who and why did they come to America, what effects did their arrivals cause, and most importantly how have their decisions affected our society to this day?

During the 15th and the 16th centuries, there were many European explores hoping to find wealth and undiscovered vast lands. Technological advances in the modern day time have greatly changed our world since the voyage of Christopher Columbus. The explorer Christopher Columbus made four trips across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain during the 1400’s and 1500’s. He was determined to find a direct water route west from Europe to Asia, but he never did. Instead, he accidentally stumbled upon the Americas. If Christopher Columbus had just some of the technology we have today in 2016, how might this have changed his planning and carrying out of his voyage?

Christopher Columbus achieved remarkable success in the New World by discovering new lands and presenting an opportunity for new development. Over the course of four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, Columbus ignited the conquest and colonization of land in the New World. He recorded his experiences in journals and letters for future navigators and sailors to read and learn from. The benefits that arose from his expeditions were known as the Columbian Exchange, which included the transfer of people, resources, and culture, all of which significantly impacted society worldwide. His world changing legacy impacted the development of the territory in the New World and increased trade, resources, and economic stability for Europe.

The problem was that many people believed that the world was flat. Without knowing what was going to happen to him, Columbus went against the popular belief of his time and bravely set out with three ships and sailed out towards the horizon. Eventually he would reach land and open up an entire New World to Europe. Columbus, on his four voyages, explored all the islands of the Caribbean and Honduras. Columbus was a man ready and eager for adventure and discovery. Today we follow his example as we explore the universe, the ocean floors, and the microscopic world. Scientists, like Columbus, are always questioning popular beliefs and setting out to prove a new theory. Columbus is a hero for all scientists and explorers today. Columbus deserves to be recognized as an American hero on Columbus Day for inspiring all people to pursue courage, discovery, exploration, and adventure.

The world is a better place because of Christopher Columbus’ important discoveries in the New World. His explorations resulted in the vast expansion of property for Europe, the exchange of goods and cultures between countries and a change in the worldview of geography. Columbus’s explorations were the catalyst for unprecedented trade known as the Columbian Exchange, which started the exchange of goods and ideas that would last for centuries and change the world forever. His discoveries unearthed new perspectives and created a mix of diverse biology between Europe and the New World. These exchanges changed the world we live in today and will continue to fuel centuries of exploration and discoveries.

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who received credit for the discovery of the Americas in 1492. His goal was to discover another route to India instead, he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and arrived in Hispaniola which is present day Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Although, historians argue he did not technically discover the Americas, he opened trade routes between the Old World and the New World. He influenced later explorers and impacted the development of the Columbian Exchange. The historians present their attitudes towards the consequences and outcomes of Christopher Columbus and his discovery. They also state their argument on his controversial legacy about whether Christopher Columbus should be perceived as a hero or a villain.

Without Christopher Columbus the people of the world wouldn’t be able to enjoy a lot of the things they can today. Christopher Columbus was a famous navigator and explorer who discovered an island back in October 12, 1492 and is called the Americas. Many people disagree that Columbus had an impact on the New World, but some people do. Columbus had a big impact when he discovered the New World. Columbus broke the isolation between the Americas and Europe. He introduced new ideas and goods such as textiles. If he didn’t do these things who knows how the world would be today.

During Christopher Columbus’ lifetime, new technology and worldwide trade was in the process of being spread. Columbus and other European mariners searched for a trade route to Asia. This was one main reason for Columbus’ voyage to the New World. He was sent by Spanish king and queen, Ferdinand and Isabel. Additionally, religion played a big part in the everyday lives of people in the Iberian peninsula because of the Reconquista and Inquisition. In fact, the spread of Christianity was one of the main reasons for his exploration. Although Christopher Columbus contributed to the spread of Spanish agricultural techniques, like the use of iron tools and the cultivation of apple and pear trees, he is responsible for the deaths of many indigenous

It should no longer come as any great surprise that Columbus was not the first to discover the Americas--Carthaginians, Vikings, and even St. Brendan may have set foot on the Western Hemisphere long before Columbus crossed the Atlantic. But none of these incidental contacts made the impact that Columbus did. Columbus and company were bound to bring more than the benefits of Christianity and double entry bookkeeping to America. His voyages started the Columbian Exchange, a hemispherical swap of peoples, plants, animals and diseases that transformed not only the world he had discovered but also the one he had left.

On August 3, 1492, Christopher Columbus and his crew piled onto three ships: the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria on a trip funded by Ferdinand and Isabella in hopes to spread Catholicism and to find new trades routes (Histroy.com Staff 5). Even though his voyage did kickoff a whole series of risky and dangerous explorations to the Americas, the consequences of these trips were detrimental to both Columbus and the people who inhabited these lands. The destruction of the territory and the diseases that were brought over, foreign to the natives, resulted in the demise of the Native American population over time while the Europeans turned a blind eye. These actions turned Christopher Columbus from a honorable, daring explorer to the catalyst to a mass genocide of innocent, unsuspecting native peoples.

In grade school, we are taught that Christopher Columbus was the man who discovered America. Now that we are older, we have learned more in depth about him as a person and explorer. Not only did he set sail Westward in search of new findings, but that he would claim them as his own, eventually they would be inherited by his eldest son, and the generations after (Columbus, Journal, paragraph 1). Columbus did leave a legacy, nonetheless like every story, there are many obstacles that lay ahead.

If Columbus hadn't ever done the actions he did, we would not live the life we live now. Columbus helped Europe and Spain with the boost in money, helping the economy, by bringing people and items to his country and homeland. Columbus also helped the "Indians" by starting the Columbian Exchange and trading crops; ending up feeding the European healthier food compared to what they would eat or grow. In the

Christopher Columbus’s life was filled with adventures and new beginnings that would leave a remarkable impression throughout history. Born in 1451 in Genoa, Columbus from an early age would become well acclimated to sailing as he began his career aboard a merchant ship and later study mathematics, astronomy, cartography, and navigation. Growing up and experiencing new thing Columbus began to come up with a plan different from all others to set sail across the Atlantic instead of going around the African continent. With his ideas being turned away from both Portugal and England it was Ferdinand and Isabella who took sympathy upon him and financial back his voyage as they both had hopes of gaining fame and fortune. In 1942, Columbus began his voyages and would carefully document each experience in the form of letters that would have a lasting impact on the world. I believe with the dramatic change in tones we see between the first and fourth letters it gives us the reader a true insight into Columbus’s mental and physical emotions over the years. Furthermore, these letters allow us to explore a part of history that is considered monumental while gaining information of what took place over a ten-year journey.

The europeans used many technology to find, discover, and explore the americas. At the time sailing was mainly stay within sight of shore in fear of falling off the edge of the world. Being eaten by giant sea creatures was also a reason for staying close to shore. But with columbus's plan to sail straight out to sea using the sight of land wasn't an option. Sailors on that expedition needed the help of technology to stay on course and find where they were at.
