The explorer Christopher Columbus, who was supported and sponsored by Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain, started the expansion of the Spanish Empire into the New World or the Americas; this was carried on by their successors Charles V and Philip II. The Spanish Empire continued to expand into new territories between 1492-1892; their accomplishments were the conquest of territories within Central America, the Caribbean islands, Mexico, North America and the Western half of South America. The motivation for the colonial expansion was for various reasons associated with religion, economic and political. The main religious reason is the quest to spread the ‘true faith’ through indigenous conversions to the Catholic faith. Dr. Bethany Aram wrote there were “expensive Asian spices” because trading with Asia was becoming very expensive with prices on goods in Europe rising from the increasing danger of travelling along the Silk Road trade route. This would be a motivation to try and find a different route to Asia which would make it less expensive for Spain, one of Columbus’ objectives was to find a different trade route to Asia via a westward course commented by David Arnold “The new land mass revealed by Columbus’s expeditions was at first an unwelcome obstacle to Spanish ambitions to find a westward route to Asia” as the Portuguese dominated the eastern seas.
