Christopher Columbus achieved remarkable success in the New World by discovering new lands and presenting an opportunity for new development. Over the course of four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean, Columbus ignited the conquest and colonization of land in the New World. He recorded his experiences in journals and letters for future navigators and sailors to read and learn from. The benefits that arose from his expeditions were known as the Columbian Exchange, which included the transfer of people, resources, and culture, all of which significantly impacted society worldwide. His world changing legacy impacted the development of the territory in the New World and increased trade, resources, and economic stability for Europe.

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who received credit for the discovery of the Americas in 1492. His goal was to discover another route to India instead, he sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and arrived in Hispaniola which is present day Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Although, historians argue he did not technically discover the Americas, he opened trade routes between the Old World and the New World. He influenced later explorers and impacted the development of the Columbian Exchange. The historians present their attitudes towards the consequences and outcomes of Christopher Columbus and his discovery. They also state their argument on his controversial legacy about whether Christopher Columbus should be perceived as a hero or a villain.

Possibly the most well known explorer ever Christopher Columbus is famous for single handedly discovering the Americas or the “New world.” Born on October 31, 1451 and died May 20 1506, Columbus would live to see more of the world than any other person at the time. Both a skilled navigator and explorer Columbus was born in the republic of Genoa, Italy. Columbus began to gather his skills and knowledge when he was very young, at the age of 13 he began to sail. His first expedition into the atlantic ocean nearly cost him his life. However he set sail again in 1492 on a groundbreaking voyage around Africa to discover the Americas. Finally the Spanish queen had given three ships to sail for the journey, after Columbus said he was going to Italy for assistance. Later in the year 1492, Columbus sailed to the East Indies only to land in the island of Hispaniola, in America. This voyage involved three small ships, the Pinzon, the Nina, and the Santa Maria commanded by Columbus himself. Columbus' voyage was originally to find a shorter trade route to India when he accidentally landed in the Bahamas and frankly, Columbus did not even know he had discovered the New World. He truly believed that he made it all the way to India. Because of this, he even named the natives of this land "Indians".

Like many others in this time period, Christopher Columbus was unbothered by the political allegiances. He was willing to sail for whatever country would sponsor his voyage. However, he could never find a patron due to his arrogance or ambition. On August 2,1492, Columbus sent 3 ships which were accompanied by crews of eighty-seven men. These men made landfall on October 12th,1492, on the island of San Salvador. He made another voyage and explored present day Puerto Rico and Jamaica. Columbus made two more voyages made between the years of 1498 and 1500 to the Caribbean and the northern coast of South America. Months after he explored present day Cuba and Hispaniola Christopher Columbus found significant amounts of gold. Many of Christopher Columbus’ successes created potential conflict between Spain and Portugal. There are many reasons why the Spanish Monarch hired Columbus to find another route to Asia, however the main reasons are to get the Queen and King more land, riches, and crops.

Christopher Columbus, an experienced seafarer, left landmark achievements in various destinations he set foot in. He made four trips across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain and he mistakenly thought there was a quicker route to Asia. It turned out he landed on two unknown continents (Jane, pg.6). Columbus then proposed his hypothesis to Ferdinand, the King of Spain, and was given money for the voyage that could potentially open new trade routes from Europe to Asia. After 2 months of sailing, Columbus arrived in what today is known as the Bahamas. After discovering the new world, other European countries as well began their expeditions to North America after hearing about the new lands. England, France and Spain were the three main European countries that began colonizing modern day United States. But with their arrivals, they had to establish relationships with the natives, and not all European countries had the same relationships.
