Christopher Vogler : The Four Stages Of A Hero's Journey

It is evident that a hero’s journey contains twelve stages, however these stages can be divided amongst themselves into three sections that corresponds to the central aspects present throughout this hero’s journey. This three section division was created by Christopher Vogler, the first section being the commence of the hero’s story and journey that supplies the viewer or reader with the necessary background information. The stages that correspond to this section being stages 1-4, the hero’s ordinary world, call to adventure, refusal of such call and their gathering with a prominent individual that provides guidance throughout the hero's journey. This other world that the hero then enters, is referred to as the Special World by Vogler who places the fifth through ninth stage of a hero’s journey into such. The fifth stage, known as the hero’s transition into the threshold, can easily be seen to fit into this section. This being so as it is composed of a hero’s first grand change that leads them into this “special world.” It is essentially this first move of the hero that leads them into a time and period of discomfort and into the unknown that eliminated the circumstances they were found upon in their ordinary world and thus, becomes this special world of unknown possibilities the hero once dreamt of. The sixth stage, being the hero’s introduction to challenges and obstacles as well as shift in relationships also falls upon such categorization. This being so as during this stage, the hero comes to either meet new individuals, break past relationships and face tensions present in their previous life in the ordinary world, this being part of the special world they are now apart of as they embark into new changes amongst themselves and their relationships that would not be so if found upon their ordinary world.
