In the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Márquez, multiple themes are brought to the table to shed some light on the tragedy that occurred in this small town in the novel. These themes, like social class, construct these personas that become the cultural norms that the citizens of this town seem to follow. The citizens’ ideas of social class have constructed the pyramid of power. People like Santiago Nasar and Bayardo San Román are on the top of the pyramid while the Vicario family and others are on the bottom. When these classes’ lives intertwine with each other, the higher up class usually finishes on top. Certain preconceptions and expectations are given to each class, and they are unchanging. The Narrator stated that, “She never missed a chance to keep her daughter away from the claws of the seigneur” (Márquez 68). Victoria Guzmán lied in the beginning, by saying she did not know that Santiago Nasar was going to be killed that day. Then when the truth comes to light, she protected her rear by saying she thought the information that the beggar woman her was “drunkards’ talk” (Márquez 13). Victoria Guzmán knew that the rigid cycle of using a servant for sexual purposes would not end. As a result, she kept the warning a secret, and Divina Flor, being a young child, followed her mother’s wishes of keeping it a secret. Victoria Guzmán became an accessory to murder for her daughter’s sake. Victoria Guzmán was not the only person to encourage the Vicario twins to murder Santiago Nasar. This whole fatal situation started with one cover up. Angela Vicario was the one who told the twins that Santiago Nasar was the person who took her virginity. If she was lying or telling the truth, we as the audience do not know for sure. One thing we know for sure is that we do not know what Angela Vicario and her mother talked about in the two hours before the twins come home.
