In the novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia Márquez, multiple themes are brought to the table to shed some light on the tragedy that occurred in this small town in the novel. These themes, like social class, construct these personas that become the cultural norms that the citizens of this town seem to follow. The citizens’ ideas of social class have constructed the pyramid of power. People like Santiago Nasar and Bayardo San Román are on the top of the pyramid while the Vicario family and others are on the bottom. The Narrator stated that, “She never missed a chance to keep her daughter away from the claws of the seigneur” (Márquez 68). Victoria Guzmán lied in the beginning, by saying she did not know that Santiago Nasar was going to be killed that day. Then when the truth comes to light, she protected her rear by saying she thought the information that the beggar woman her was “drunkards’ talk” (Márquez 13). Victoria Guzmán knew that the rigid cycle of using a servant for sexual purposes would not end. As a result, she kept the warning a secret, and Divina Flor, being a young child, followed her mother’s wishes of keeping it a secret. Victoria Guzmán became an accessory to murder for her daughter’s sake. Victoria Guzmán was not the only person to encourage the Vicario twins to murder Santiago Nasar. This whole fatal situation started with one cover up. Angela Vicario was the one who told the twins that Santiago Nasar was the person who took her virginity. If she was lying or telling the truth, we as the audience do not know for sure. One thing we know for sure is that we do not know what Angela Vicario and her mother talked about in the two hours before the twins come home. The surface impressions of Santiago Nasar, Angela Vicario, and Bayardo San Roman are deeply rooted in Latin culture; underneath the layer of tradition, however, lies a host of paradoxical traits which indicate the true complexity of human nature.
Values are a vital part of any community. They shape the identity of a culture and help to form the identity of each individual in that society. Sometimes these embedded values have more power over a person than anyone would like to admit. Gabriel García Márquez shows the power of the value of honor in his book, Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Honor is incorporated throughout the entire novel in every character. “I knew what they were up to, and I didn’t only agree, I never would have married him if he hadn’t done what a man should do” (62). Márquez’s uses periphrasis, syntax, and chronological divisions between chapters to subdue overt comparison between the portrayed values of Columbian culture and its societal norms with the conflicting relationship of Victoria Guzmán and Santiago Nasar, effectively shrouding his commentary.
People in the small town are eager to know if the couple has properly complete their marriage, by doing this it is not only displaying blood on a bed sheet it is displaying honor, which the Vicario family do not have due to Angela. In order to restore the family honor the twins must kill Santiago. The narrators states “The lawyer stood by the thesis of homicide in legitimate defense of honor, which was upheld by the court in good faith, and the twins declared at the end of the trial that they would have done it again a thousand times over for the same reason” (Marquez 48). The narrator shows in Chronicle of a Death Foretold the type of violence is murder for honor. Even through the twins slaughtered Santiago like a pig, the murder was not completely their fault. The boys purposely announced the murder to the town people to have someone try to stop them from committing the murder. Pedro and Pablo did not feel it is right killing their friend, but they did not have any other options besides killing him to restore honor.
