New York City inhabits hundreds and hundreds of tall structures, but the tallest of them all back in the day between the 30s and 80s were four: The Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, and lastly the twin towers of the World Trade Center.
The Carnegie Building at Penn State has a deep and rich history. It was constructed in 1904 due to a $150,000 donation from Andrew Carnegie, a member of the Penn State Board of Trustees. The Carnegie Building has held various functions over the years, such as being the home to the school’s first library. After a renovation in 1940 and the moving of the library to the current location, the building became the office and rehearsal space for the music department. The Penn State Marching Blue Band was initially established because of another generous gift on behalf of Carnegie. The Daily Collegian, the school newspaper, housed its headquarters in the building from 1972 to December of 1989 before moving downtown to the

The first thing we explored was the famous Empire State Building in New York City. I was shocked how tall this skyscraper is. It is a lot taller than the surrounding buildings. We had to wait in a long line for a while because a lot of tourist wanted to go see the city from the top of the building. When it was finally our turn, we first had to take a small elevator about half way up and stopped at the little museum inside the building. In the museum, we could read about the history of the Empire State Building and the process of it being built. It also had pictures of the difficult construction process and early blueprints of what it was going to look like. Furthermore it explained the construction of the building and gave us facts about the measurements. After that, we took an elevator all the way to the top. As soon as I stepped out onto the observation deck I was speechless. The view was breathtaking. From the top, I could see all of New York City. I could look on top of other skyscrapers and see their swimming pools and roof gardens. The view was just stunning. I even saw the beach and the Atlantic Ocean. People looked like little dots and cars like ants crawling through the streets. It was just fascinating to see this. After taking in the view for a little while, we sadly had to leave.
Standing in New York City, the Chrysler Building reaches a height of 319 meters and was once-though only for a short while-the tallest building in the world. While the building is entirely covered in a monotone gray color, the spire consists of a shiny, reflective metal. All four sides of this spire are adorned with triangular windows that each point away from the center of the structure, with the base of the triangles perched upon 7 arcs that form a pyramid-like shape. Below this, several ledges form, with each varying in length but certainly being wider than the one above it. The middle section of the building is the longest and boasts the most windows, though every segment has its fair share of glass. There are 12 eagle heads split between 2 of the ledges, with the sharp angles of these creations being noticeable in 2 places: the eagles’ beaks and feathers. The base of the Chrysler Building is broad and is the widest segment of the construction, as a strong foundation was essential for the building’s survival.

Why do I keep my Jeep when it keeps breaking down on me? That is the question that I have asked myself multiple times over the summer. To this day, I have put more time, effort and money into my Jeep than it is actually worth. So why continue to restore this beautifully ancient beast? Well, the answer is actually very simple; I love working on it.
The Chicago auto show is the longest running show, that exhibit domestic and imported passenger cars, trucks, sport vehicles and concept cars. I decided to go to the auto show as my nontraditional sporting event. I had attend the auto show back in 2015 and I noticed that not a lot changed throughout the years. We went on a Monday because I figured it would have been less crowded. The vehicles to me were separated by luxury and non-luxury. They had the imported vehicle sectioned off with only VIP to enter, while everyone could see the vehicle from the outside. There were a lot of different vendors and spokes women showcasing certain vehicles features. One of my favorite things to do was collect the bag from the different auto dealers, I was
While historic buildings have benefited greatly from decades of regulatory reform, a new generation of advocacy is required to address issues of building integrity . For historic buildings, introducing building codes may present a challenge that can stifle the historic preservation tenet applied to the historic structure whether it be preservation, restoration, rehabilitation or reconstruction. Today technology allows us to construct structures that we would never have been able to make in the past. Some of the creations are impressive based on what they accomplish but others are masterpieces in themselves. Man’s capability to build such tall buildings, as the skyscrapers we are familiar with covering our cities today, is a major expression of the advancements we have made as a culture. The power necessary to build such tall structures inspired competition between architects to see who could build the tallest one. One skyscraper that has inspired many and served as a model, for high rise buildings that were created after, is the Chrysler Building. The Chrysler Building serves as an identifying mark to anyone that
As we’ve discussed in the class before, the history of a building is as important as the buildings function, sometimes even more important. It is important to not forget the historical aspects of buildings like how the White House, the place where modern presidents’ still reside, was built primarily by slaves. It is important to recognize the negative and positive things about a building that tie it to our history, lest these things become headlines when people are reminded of their past.
