Chuck Close is an american artist known for his realism portraits that are about 9 feet tall. He has faced many challenges in his life including dyslexia and eventually becomimg paralysed from the neck down. He believes that these challenges have made him a stronger person and artist. As he said, “Almost every decision I've made as an artist is an outcome of my particular learning disorders.” Close was born on July 5th, 1940, in Monroe, Washington. His father died when he was only 11 years old. He had one brother. His mother was very supportive of the path he chose. He has always loved painting and drawing. It was the only class he excelled at in school because of his learning disability. He used art as way to cope with his learning problems. …show more content…
Besides his learning disability, he also has suffered from a rare disease called Face Blindness. This disease causes you to not recognise faces, no matter who it is. He always says that it helps him remember people if he paints them. But that's not all. When he was almost 50 years old, a spinal artery collapses and he became paralyzed from the neck down. That made it much more difficult for him to continue painting. But, with some physical therapy, some advanced technology, and perseverance he was able to continue creating. He has a brush device that is like a brace on his arm that allows him to move. He also has an easel that rotates and moves up and down so he can reach the whole portrait. He went through a lot but is still a happy person and is doing what he loves.
Chuck Close is important to learn about because he has been through a lot and yet he is still an amazing artist. He shows young kids with disabilities and other problems that you can still do what you love and be happy no matter what life puts in front of you. And in art class we use the same methods as him. We use the grid method in class along with many kids across the country. Everybody should learn about Close and everything he brought to the art
He says that before he starts a new painting he cleans the house, he says that he wants to make sure that the cleaning is done before he heads out to his studio to start indulging. He says he has a guilt matrex working. He doesn't like to go out and buy canvases so he makes his own canvas. He makes sure that he has the right cloth then stretches it over a wooden frame, he likes the feeling of making the canvas, he says it's apart of his art making process. He wants the whole process to be made by him. While Roy is creating art he likes to listen to music, such as percussion.

Chuck Close was born on July 5, 1940 in Monroe, Washington. His father, Leslie Durward Close, was a sheet metal worker, and his mother Mildred Wagner was a trained pianist. Chuck Close’s hobbies as a kid where painting and art. Suffering from severe dyslexia, Close did poorly in school but found happiness in making art. After earning his MFA from Yale in 1964, Close turned out to be one of the most famous American art world by creating large-scale, photorealist portraits that
In New York there was an art museum called The Whitney Museum of American Art they were the first ones to display Chucks works of art. From there Chuck had became more and more known because of his art works and other exhibits displaying his canvas’s. “Even during those recurring moments in the cycle of art world fashion when painting has been pronounced dead, the relevance of his work has remained evident. One of the strengths of his work is that, since it has never been in style, it can never go out of style. It is unaffected by fashion( The Ebook).” In 1988, Chuck had a spinal artery rupture after this incident he almost became permanently paralyzed from the neck down. He regained consciousness from lots of therapy and rehab but he never let the fatal accident of his spinal artery jeopardize his career. Some people think because of his accident he became an even better
People who can create art straight from their minds has always amazed me, and Wayne Thiebaud is one of those people. Thiebaud’s art was bright and was mostly created in the pop art era, which made people assume that pop art was his label. Thiebaud does not classify himself as a part of the pop art movement. He has his own kind of style which makes him so different from other artists. His art is so simple but simplistic at the same time and that makes his work captivating. Being able to find what you are interested in at such a young age is special and Thiebaud was able to do that. Even after years and years of painting and creating art, he still picks at his work and wants to do better and that shows his
“The worst possible thing in the world can happen to you, and you will overcome it. You will be happy again.” This is a the quote of a very famous artist, Chuck Close, who suffered from diseases that made his life very hard, but there was one thing that kept him happy, that kept him going and that is art. Close was born July 5, 1940 in Monroe, Washington and is well known for his large scale, photo-realistic portrait paintings. He is a visual artist who used inventive techniques to paint the human face. He uses the grid method to divide the portraits that he’s painting into smaller units to keep them in proportion. While using the grid he thinks very methodically and precisely, every stroke he makes he can see the outcome or what part it plays in the bigger picture.
American artist Chuck Close was born in july5, 1940. He is still alive today at 77 years old. When he was younger he had a lot of challenges in life. When he was in school he was not good at math or reading because of his learning disability called dyslexia. The only thing he was good at was art and with the help and support of his parents he eventually Graduated from the University of Washington with a B.A. and then received his M.A. from Yale University.
Chuck Close was born on July 5, 1940 in Monroe, Washington. He suffered from dyslexia and prosopagnosia (face blindness). His teachers did not understand his disability and he was told he was not going to go to college. Unlike his teachers, his parents were very supportive of his artistic needs. When he was 11 years old, his father (Leslie Close) died and his mother (Mildred Close) developed breast cancer. He even had his own problem when
I believe that the artist is expressing himself when he is creating a painting, sculpture, drawing, etc. I also believe that art can be interpreted in many ways. One way that I thought an artist was able to express the way he thinks was through a drawing that was created by Otto Dix’s drawing Krigeskruppel (War Cripples). The time that Dix created this piece was the time of World War 1 (pg 40.) Dix was able to first see the effect that the war was having on soldiers. The drawing contains four men walking, to what seems to be downtown. The leader of the four men is smoking a large cigar and is needed the support of a cane because he is missing an arm and both of his legs, the next is man is also missing a leg and supporting himself by a cane.
It was there that he dabbled in new forms, styles, and materials and also produced some Pop art. Chuck Close spent quite a bit of time trying to find his artistic niche. In an interview with Ilka Scobie, Close explained that he had been doing big paintings “forever… In graduate school I made the biggest paintings. That is the only aspect of my work that hasn’t changed…” (3). Although Chuck Close experimented for a long time before he found his signature style, which seems to be a combination of a gridding process, abstract expressionism, and portraiture, it has turned into something very unique and appealing to the viewer. The time he took to figure out his personal style was certainly not wasted. Close explained that his inability to recognize faces (prosopagnosia) “may have inadvertently pushed me in the direction I’m working today—trying to scrutinize the faces of the people I know and love, and trying to figure out what they look like” (Smith 15). Chuck Close’s signature style depicts the faces of many different people in an abstract way. He uses a grid method and each square is “made form multiple small geometric forms” (Ravin, and Odell). His work is abstract and very large. Close’s paintings are remarkable, viewing them at an up close view or at a distance gives the viewer an entirely different experience. It is almost as if the viewer is looking at two separate pieces of

Chuck Close is a contemporary artist, known for painting monumental heads. For his subjects, Close used portraits drawn of himself, his family members, friends, and fellow artists. He chose this selective group of people because they just regular ordinary folks. He felt that if he used celebrity as subject matter, this would only distract from appreciating the beauty of his work. In addition all his portraits are title using only the first names.
“The secret to doing anything is believing that you can do it. Anything that you believe you can do strong enough, you can do. Anything. As long as you believe.” This is one of the many inspirational things I have heard Bob Ross say on his show, “The Joy Of Painting.” Bob Ross is one of the most beloved American painters and is known by thousands of people across the world. His show was all about teaching his viewers how to paint and enjoy themselves while doing it. However, many of us tuned into the show not to paint, but to just listen to his calming voice and watch him form a masterpiece on a blank canvas. It is crazy to watch all the things he can do with a brush. He is also known for using the “wet-on-wet” painting technique which he learned from his mentor William Alexander. This is the process of putting oil paints directly on top of one another to create complete paintings in less than an hour. Bob Ross practiced this so much that he got it down to under 30 minutes for his show.
