Dear Future Me, I read, Cinderella, a poem written by Anne Sexton that revealed many themes. Themes that criticized not only Disney, but society’s vision of the world. This poem is not the children’s story that you have in mind; Sexton’s Cinderella is sadistic and shows the cracks in society’s view of beauty. Beauty is molded by advertising, fashion, and cosmetics industries. Beauty has become deceptive, a false image that corrupts young minds into thinking a certain weight or look is considered “beautiful”. What we have yet to understand is that this sort of beauty is not real. Everyone can obtain a personally healthy weight, but this does not mean every individual will be “skinny”. And not every individual will have perfect skin, glossy hair, white teeth, and glimmering eyes.
