From ancient Egyptian slippers embellished with gold to Cinderella’s glass slipper seen in the recent Disney film “Cinderella” (2015)—more than 250 pairs of shoes (slippers, oxfords, platforms, mules, stilettos, brogues, and the list goes on) were on display at the exhibition called ‘Shoes: Pleasure and Pain’ inside of SCAD Fash Museum of Fashion + Film. The exhibit showcased shoes from past historic periods of time to present modern day, contemporary futuristic-looking footwear created with 3D printing. The shoes were separated by five themes: “Status”, “Transformation”, “Seduction”, “Creation” and “Obsession”. My favorite section was “Status” because the presentation was really neat; it definitely drew in my attention. I assumed that this section portrayed the social status of famous people who wore them in the past because most of them were made by high end designers such as Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Alexander McQueen, and Christian Louboutin to name a few that I remember. I learned from one of the students working the exhibit that white leather shoes conveyed that the wearer was rich enough to afford a new pair once those became dirty. I thought to myself how ridiculous it was that people actually wore these impractical shoes just to show off how wealthy or privileged they were. Another favorite section of mine was “Transformation” because it featured the classic Cinderella glass slipper that Lily James wore in the recent film. It was just as beautiful in person. “Seduction” explored the concept of footwear as a representation of sexual empowerment and pleasure.
