How does the tone or imagery in poetry make it better for the reader to understand? The emotional reactions or mental visualization of the tone or imagery can help create the overall meaning for a poem. Adding one of these or even both can help visualize the readers mind into better understanding how the writer wants to convey the meaning of a poem. The poem “Cinderella’s Diary” is a short poem that is supposed to be about Cinderella’s life, taking place after “happily ever after”. It goes to show that not everything has a happy ending. The author’s tone making Cinderella dislike her new life with the prince has left a very shocking impression to the reader. The beginning of the poem already says enough about her mediocre life after happily ever after. In fact, later on she even states that she is “lost in ever after”. She does not enjoy this new life, because throughout the whole poem she is complaining about every little thing going on in the royal house. She started off saying that she misses her old life with her step mother. She also says that the prince is boring, then she went on to complain about the time it takes to dress, which is four hours. Then she begins to fantasize about the guy who holds the door, wondering his presence when the prince leaves, then moves on to gaze at the hunters in the morning through her chamber windows, drooling over their masculinity compared to the prince. Then mentioning how there is always someone playing music in every room. She dreads seeing every painting of the prince and hearing about the queen bragging about him. The major one of it all of course is seeing Cinderella saying that she wishes she had never encountered the glass slipper. Her negative attitude towards everything sets the tone for the poem overall. In conclusion, the writer’s intention to write “Cinderella’s Diary” left an impression to the reader. It was set to leave the reader
