When producing any film there are a numerous amounts of different aspects that initally need to come together to create a film that will be succesful. The producers of said film need to hire a crew, actors, set a buedget, find a place to shoot the film, and have a number of other resources that are vital to the production of a film. For example, cinematic technique is a very important part of a film. Cinematic technique includes and is not limited to, how the director decides to use camera shots, angles, movmeent, and lighting to his or her advantage. Thus hoping to leave the viewer feeling a certain way. In the film version of Life of Pi cinematic techniques are heavily visible in the opening scene. The scene starts with the gate of an zoo,
There are various elements that contribute to the significance of a film. Cinematography, is one important element in which the camera is used to capture visual images through a number of other controllable elements such as; camera lens, framing, scale, movement etc. Editing is another fundamental component of film studies in which different shots are put together in a coherent sequence in order to make meaning of a film.
Auteur Theory is based on three premises, the first being technique, the second being personal style, and the third being interior meaning. Furthermore, there is no specific order in which these three aspects must be presented or weighted with regard to a film. An Auteur must give films a distinctive quality thus exerting a personal creative vision and interjecting it into the his or her films.
The development of the motion picture industry was brought to you by many directors and writers through out history. Movies are a very important part of American culture, people went to the movies to escape the humdrum of their everyday lives. They were a way for people to put themselves into the lives of others and in situations they would usually never find themselves in. Simply put movies were a way to escape into a new more exciting world, even if just for a little bit. In the beginning there were a few production companies that would put out movies in an almost factory setting and manner. There were hundreds of workers, set designers, camera men, and other crews. With this amount of man power, companies would come out with hundreds of films a month. This is were directing and writing began to develop a style and narrative that would be carried into today's movies.
In development, a project producer takes an original idea from a source and pairs with a writer to develop a script. This is a rather lengthy process as the script is drafted and redrafted to perfection until ready to pitch to potential financial sources, such as banks and investors. Once backed by funding the film goes into pre-production where a carefully designed plan is set forth and managed by the films production crew. Production is when the cameras are rolling, Post production is where the editing and CGI take place, a rather expensive even found more so in sequels and hi tech films. Distribution is the means of where the film will be made available to the public. In today’s market, there are many distributors Rental, DVD, Pay Per View, Television and other media
The Hollywood style involved studios pushing out hundreds of films by mass manufacturing stories, film makers, actors, almost as an assembly
In this essay I will be discussing five key points throughout Post Production history between the 1900s-1960s. Post Production is seen as a vital component in the cinematic industry as it essentially finalises the final products. Techniques that have been developed over the years are incredibly important, but they all have an origin. Although these techniques started out without overwhelming effect, they are now unbelievably crucial to how films are constructed. The five points I wish to discuss go as follows: The Great Train Robbery and Edwin Porter himself, D.W. Griffith and his overwhelming influence on editing, The Jazz Singer, the Kuleshov Effect and finally, 2001: A Space Odyssey. As well as discussing these key factors, this essay will take into consideration secondary material.
How do the cinematic techniques (mise-en-scène, cinematography, editing, and sound design) work together in the selected scene or sequence to develop the film’s central characters and themes?
This paper will focus on the film techniques used by Cameron in his three most known movies, Titanic (1997), Avatar (2009), and Terminator series. Mise-en-scene according to John Gibbs is used in film studies in the discussion of visual style. Translated literally it means “To put on stage”, but for the purpose of students, it is defined as the contents of the frame and the way they are organized (p 5). In addition, a director’s style can be identified only through the arrangement and orchestrations of the film’s mise-en-scene (Nelmes, 425).The films Titanic, Avatar, and Terminator series were successful
Yann Martel (born 1963) is an author best known for the Man Booker Prize winning novel Life Of Pi, a# 1 international bestseller published in more than 50 territories. It has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide and spent more than a year on the New York Times Bestseller list. It was adapted to the screen by Ang Lee.
Effective film advertisement is achieved via film trailers as they are devoid of intricate storyline details yet still attract audiences. The film trailer for The Secret life of Walter Mitty (2013), directed by Ben Stiller and Sean Penn, reveals that Walter Mitty endures frequent daydreams and lives a relatively monotonous lifestyle until embarking on a mystery-driven quest, to carry out ‘noteworthy’ experiences. The film trailer for Life of Pi (2012), based on a bestselling novel and directed by Ang Lee, uncovers a teenage boy who is marooned in the middle of the ocean after a terrifying shipwreck. Both films focus on the lives of their key characters, who learn a great deal about themselves through the course of the film.
In Life of Pi, Yann Martel weaving a wondrous tale of God, a shipwreck, and the nature of storytelling, but the film version, marvelously made by Ang Lee, contains several significant inconsistencies with the book. Although the general structure of the story is the same in both versions, the limitations of film-making and the realities of what makes a film entertaining create the few changes between the two versions.
A movie can be perfect. The lines, the faces of the performers, the colors on the screen- they can all be edited to precise perfection. The grandiosity and beauty of a Hollywood production cannot be beat, and that is what draws
Big Fish is a film that jumps between past and present to relay the fantastical stories and adventures of Edward Bloom. This film presents these stories through various flashbacks as his son, Will Bloom, tries to piece together the man his father claims to be. As the flashbacks unfold, stunning cinematography, lighting and colours are used to create beautiful and enchanting scenes that really complete the movie. The sequence I chose to analyse is the town scene in which Edward comes to the realisation that he does not belong in Spectre, and needs to leave whilst he still can.
With this short but very interesting and informative class I have just scratched the surface of the what it takes to make a full fleged film. It takes much more than I had presumed to make a movie in Hollywood. The number of people that it takes to make a minute of a movie let alone the entire movie was astonishing to me. There are many things that it takes to start making a movie but without an idea of some sort there is no movie to be made.
The film industry has continuously changed since its inception due to rapid technology advancements. Camera technology has been a key factor that has influenced the growth of filmmaking. The first motion picture in the world was produced in the early 1880s, and the first public screening occurred ten years later. It didn’t take long for the quality of films to improve as new filmmaking equipment emerged. Ever since the first movie was produced, the film industry has been continuously changing in response to emerging filmmaking technology. Introduction of digital photography and digital data storage along with the development of internet significantly influenced the film industry (Barsam, 2015). These technologies contributed
