The Circle of Confidence Exercise to Defeat Test Anxiety Step 1: Think about the upcoming exam and begin to define the qualities that you need to have in order to be at your best when you take your next test. These qualities are referred to as resource states. Examples of resourceful states that will help a person get through an upcoming examination include focused, confident, relaxed, determined, motivated and found it easy to recall information. Think about the feelings that are helpful to you and write them down. Step 2: In your mind's eye, imagine that you are drawing a circle in front of you. Make it a fairly large circle, one that is large enough for you to step into. It could be about three feet in diameter or larger, whatever size you choose, make sure that it is comfortable for you. In your mind, focus in on the sounds of success. What does success sound like to you? Does a song come to mind? A positive and supportive voice from the past? You may even imagine a positive affirmation? Whatever it is, imagine yourself intensifying this sound. Fill yourself up with the positive feelings. What do you feel? Do you feel relaxed and calm? Do you feel confident and powerful? Whatever you feel, let the positive feelings flow through you. How is your posture? Notice the position of your hands and feet. Notice how you hold your head as you feel the focus flow through you. How are you breathing? Is it slow and steady? If needed, give yourself a few minutes to imagine breathing out fear and breathing in confidence. Allow the positive feelings, visualizations, sounds and colors to flow through your mind, growing more powerful with each passing moment. When you feel the focus and positive energy flowing through you, so much so that you cannot be filled anymore, touch your thumb and index finger with in a unique, yet forceful way.
