What is the meaning of life? Joseph Campbell states that, “Life has no meaning. Each of us has meaning and we bring it to life. It is a waste to be asking the question when you are the answer.” Directed by Orson Welles, the film Citizen Kane (1941) is about Charles Foster Kane who is a wealthy newspaper publisher and in the film, his life is retold from when he was a little boy to his passing by his friends and family. On the other hand, American Beauty (1999), a film directed by Sam Mendes, tells the story of Lester Burnham who is a forty two year old man with a seemingly normal family trying to figure out his own life. Both of the main characters in these films have very different meaning of lives, but as the films progress on and death is upon them, they have one thing in common which is family. One may think that working constantly is the most important thing in life, but one may also have to consider the little aspects that come with life too or the end will result in something negative. This meaning of life does not apply to Charles Foster Kane as we can see through almost half of the movie, all he cares about after he turns twenty five years old is running the newspaper company. When Kane met his first wife; Emily, he treated her sweetly, but as the years passed on, he let his work at the newspaper takeover and that ruined their marriage.
