RITTMAN — Council approved designating $50,000 from this year’s budget for the sidewalk program, which had been moving along on an annual basis until it hit some bumps in the road.
A previous council, led by the late Bill Workman, took on the controversial issue of enforcing the law to make sure sidewalks were installed or repaired. A decision was made to set aside $50,000 a year to make the improvements, covering the cost for homeowners who opted to have the bill assessed to their property taxes. However, a problematic area, a tight budget and a grant award that kept getting pushed back delayed the program in recent years.
City Manager Larry Boggs sent a memo to council ahead of their Nov. 14 meeting, informing them the sidewalks along West Ohio Avenue and the numbered streets to the south would be fixed in the next phase. Letters were sent via certified mail to the property owners informing them about the sidewalk program, and those who planned on fixing their own sidewalks should let Bogg’s assistant, Joan Challinor, know by Jan. 15.
