Unfortunately, I had to find someone else to speak with due to the fact that all my calls were not returned. I spoke with Bradley Roback at the Department of Planning and Development (DPD), City of Chicago. Bradley Roback is an Economic Development Coordinator for the City of Chicago. Obviously this is a very large department that handles many different issues as they relate to the Chicago's planning and development. He started off by letting me know that his department does not have a childhood obesity plan so to speak, but that they work with other organizations to help combat the topic of childhood obesity. Specifically, the Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children or CLOCC. CLOCC is an organization started by Lurie's Children Hospital (LCH) here in Chicago. LCH provides most of the funding for CLOCC. In 2011, the DPD received a $5.8 million grant from the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help promote healthier food in Chicago. With this Grant, the DPD partnered with CLOCC and the Department of Public Health in order to come with a plan to promote healthier food. The plan known as Chicago's Food Plan and is titled "A Recipe for Healthy Places". The plan was developed in 2013 and addresses food and obesity, and how they relate. Chicago's Food Plan is divided up into six segments: Build Healthier Neighborhoods, Grow Food, Expand Healthy Food Enterprises, Strengthen the Food Safety Net, Serve Healthy Food and Beverages, and Improve eating Habits. Although they are in year 2 of this plan, Bradley couldn't say exactly when this plan would be complete. However Bradley did
Living in a big city is a lot different than living in the country. Cities are compact , loud, and always busy; the country is usually isolated, tranquil, and underpopulated. In a city like Chicago, which is home to about 2.8 million people, there are so many things that contrast from the country. In Chicago, there are about 16 houses per block, there are about two schools within a five mile radius, schools are packed, sports aren’t well funded, and education was kind of like a repeat every year.
The governing core of South San Francisco is the city council, which creates municipal laws and the overall policy, decides how to expend treasury, assigns members to all consultative local businesses and represents the city officially. The city council`s members are Richard A. Garbarino as a mayor, Mark N. Addiego as a vice mayor, Pradeep Gupta, Karyl Matsumoto and Liza Normandy.
The Supreme Court case McDonald vs Chicago was about the Second Amendment. Specifically, Chicago and Oak Park’s ban on handguns. Several lawsuits were filed against them after the Supreme Court shared their opinions in the District of Columbia v. Heller. The court voiced that the ban was in violation of the Second Amendment. Ultimately, the Supreme Court decided that the Fourteenth Amendment made the Second Amendment applicable to all the states in regards of self-defense. This case is relevant to the issue of federalism because the Second Amendment gives rights to the people in order to defend themselves. Therefore, offering a balance of power between People, the Federal government, and the State government.
It was curiosity, and a recommendation from an upper classman, that brought me to the Engage Chicago informational meeting. When I first walked in, I did not know what to expect. I only knew that over the summer, I wanted to do something that involved helping people and making a difference in the community as well as stepping out of my comfort zone and exploring new experiences. Engage Chicago provides a perfect opportunity to achieve my goals for the summer. There is a wide range of nonprofit organizations students can choose to apply and intern at, depending on each individual interests. From programing at a local YMCA to assisting at a pediatric cancer center, there are countless hands
The trial took place in Newark, New Jersey. In 1974, two of the witnesses, Bello ‘and Bradley renounced their testimony and confessed of lying in hopes of receiving good treatment from the cops. Two years later, the case was relooked and Carter and Artis were released but only for six months. A second trial took place in the fall of 1976, in which the two men were convicted again and found guilty. A third trial occured in the fall of 1982, as a result of the New Jersey State Supreme Court’s rejection for the appeal. A group of Canadians decided to study Carter’s case because they strongly felt that he was innocent. They moved to the US and became fully committed to help prove his innocence after the summer of 1983. They worked alongside
Opening the fifth day, we had The Chicago Plan, a quartet whose frontline encompasses German multi-reedist Gebhard Ullmann and American trombonist Steve Swell, the composers of the group. The rhythmic foundation was under the responsibility of Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello and electronics, and Michael Zerang on drums.
On May 1st, 1893, the political and economic elite of the city of Chicago spared no expense when they host the Columbian Exposition, which showcased the technological, economic, and social capabilities of the United States of America and the City of Chicago to the world (Hoyt, 2003). For the United States, this cultural, technological, and economic showcase was an example of the massive capabilities of the country that now rivaled—perhaps even surpassed the capabilities of Europe. For Chicago, the hope was to cement a change in its social and cultural appearance to the outside world. Although one of America’s fastest growing cities—as well as one of the largest, Chicago was having immense struggles with its image as its impoverished and marginalized
Being able to retain highly educated individuals was one of the tangible benefits of the creation of the DBAP. Increasing the city’s population has led to greater tax revenue, job opportunities, and overall community strength. In part due to the construction of the DBAP, the once depressed downtown now boasts a higher population that hasn’t been seen since the area was dominated by tobacco
Childhood obesity has been and still is a problem in Chicago. "Children in Chicago have higher overweight and obesity prevalence rates than US Children in the same age groups" (CLOCC, 2013). Our youth are very limited in their built environments, thus creating a lack of excerise for our children. Open space is at a premium in the city. Housing is built sometimes inches from one another. Some communities simply don't have much area for kids to play and exercise. In order to help reduce the amount of obese children, our families, schools, and communities need to come together and create a plan.
The City of Grand Prairie was incorporated in 1909; however, the community was first recognized under the name Dechman in 1863 after its founder, Alexander McRae Dechman. Ironically, the first post office in town opened in 1877 under the name “Deckman” because a employee at the U.S. Post Office could not read the writing on the form. Later in 1877 the name of the town changed to Grand Prairie.
Carl Sandburg describes Chicago as a tough and hefty city. Chicago is portrayed as a proud city, a city proud to be so “strong and cunning” whereas other cities of the time were not. Chicago is characterized by the people and workers who live in it. Sandburg loves Chicago even though it is a brutally tough city. Sandburg uses imagery, personification, and punctuation to characterize the city as an actual person.
In my opinion, there are many reasons on why the Chicago’s Housing Authority’s “Plan for Transformation” creates more problems that it solved. The Plan for Transformation pursues to demolish all low-income high-rise building in Chicago. Because of that, in some ways, the Plan for Transformation are continuing racial and class segregation, as thousands of residents were displaced to the poorer south and west sides of Chicago. Thus, in my opinion, all these situations caused the poor African-Americans to be concentrated at the same place and lead them to have more social ties and denser networks that lead to more crimes and deviance among them.
The city of Dallas is one of the cities in the United States with the highest poverty percentage. I chose the topic as my previous job was in the city of Dallas I cared for many poor people who lived in the city. They had no insurance, most of them were homeless and had nowhere to go after being discharged. More than half of Dallas families make less than $25,000 annually. 28.4 percent of the households earn less than $25,000 per annum (Gilmore, 2017). The Dallas economy has demonstrated to work well for the rich and well up, but it has failed to provide opportunities and favorable growth for the working class and poor in the society ( Gilmore, 2017). The literacy level is low in Dallas County, and it is estimated that by the year 2030, the
The City of Santa Ana is the second most densely populated city in Orange County, and eleventh largest in California. Incorporated on June 1, 1886, and with a City Charter adopted in 1952, the City of Santa Ana has a total population of 345,930 as of 2016. The highest ethnicity percentage is Hispanic with 78.2%, followed by White with 45.9%. The median household income using the 2010 U.S Census Bureau was $54,
The childhood obesity issue has become so prominent that First Lady Obama has adopted childhood obesity as her pet project and has sworn to end it within a generation (USA Today. (2/9/2010). To that end and to assist her, Unite against Obesity, recognizing the prevalence of pediatric obesity in our own community has decided to launch series of programs and well-researched interventions that will target guardians and children at risk in our community.
