Claim: The U.S. should have mandatory civic service for two years between the age of 18 and 25 Type of claim: Policy claim- the claim states that something should be done. For this argument one must clearly explicate what is considered a “civic service”. A supporter must identify what is considered a civic service because, it’s a matter of degree and leaves the argument susceptible to attack. Civic service could be mistakenly associated with civic responsibility, for example volunteering and voting. Questions such as “what is a civic service” can disrupt the advocate’s argument. The misunderstanding of what is considered civic service could potentially be harmful to the Advocates proposal, therefore the advocate must be precise to avoid …show more content…
This diminutive change provides the audience with a more precise and clearly defined claim. The audience most likely will have a more positive response to the claim because American society values military service Jury duty and other social services enforced by the law. With the current version of the claim more emotional and logical appeals can be made to refute those supporting. From the USA Today journal an article on forced civic responsibilities was written called, “Forced voting won't cure indifference, ignorance”. In the article a strong point was brought up against mandatory voting. “One of the main reasons non-voters avoid the ballot box is that they just don't care enough to get informed. That's sad. But forcing them to vote won't change that.” This makes a strong case against the idea of mandatory civic services, in regards to civic responsibility. This creates the opportunity for the opposing advocates to persuade the audience to agree that it is against their best interest to support mandatory civic services. If the audience feels that there votes are being overshadowed by those who are not concerned with political elections they will want to prevent forced voting to help protect their own interest. Multiple Questions could be used to argue the claim such as “What is considered two years of service”. For this argument we will consider civic service to include civic duties and civic responsibilities. If both are considered civic service it is difficult to determine what two years of service would be for responsibilities such as voting and volunteering. Those opposing could question what is considered two years of voting? Advocates against the claim could also question what is considered two years of jury duty? Those arguing could benefit by using peoples appeal to democracy and discussing how making civic services mandatory conflicts with your civil liberties. People
Should national service be mandatory for all Americans? No, Americans should not be required to perform any service they did not choose to do. In my opinion, all service should be optional and no one should be forced to do things they aren't comfortable with doing. I feel that if the government were to empose a mandatory national service on the American people, many would be upset with thier decision and rebel against it, ending in only conflict. It is said that "The United States was founded on our right to pursue happiness." If things were to become mandatory with no free will by the people, would there be any happiness to pursue at the end. I agree with the statement in passage 2 'The Heart of Service' "Large-scale mandatory service is
Many high schools around the country have made community service hours mandatory in order for the seniors to graduate. Not everyone agrees that this should be a requirement because seniors already have enough on their plate. When seniors are about to graduate, it does not matter how many tasks they have to complete as a requirement if they do not feel like doing it and they have no motivation they will not complete
When just turning 18 the citizens should take advantage of having the opportunity to vote. In
Many countries require young people to serve two years of military service, and as we continue to have military conflicts across the world, some people have proposed that the united states adopt a similar type of policy of mandatory conscription. I believe that a two-year period of national service should be obligatory for all 18 year olds. It’ll help strengthen the character of youth, and will help increase the collective conscience of a nation and the restraint of leaders when considering military action. As we have 18 year olds go into the military, they should get the option in whatever kind of public service that suits his or her interest. Different genders across the world are frequently given different responsibilities. For example,
Paired with all the controversy over current immigration laws, renowned political scientist, Robert Putnam, released a study showing, “...the more diverse a community is, the less people care about and engage with that community. Diversity, in fact, seems to breed distrust and disengagement (Stengel).” Americans are so divided among racial, partisan, and economic bounds that the integrating forces of public service seem necessary. Perhaps instead of perceiving themselves as self-serving individuals, assuming a role in a mission much larger than themselves would humble and enlighten them (Daily Pennsylvania cite this correctly). National Service should become a country-wide rite of passage for young people. They should give contribute to the community as they transition to adulthood and become a functioning entity within it. The service should promote patriotism and an interest in the service as an enlightened nation (Stengel). Everyone should do something for their country, everyone should be proud to be an American. The freedoms and liberties that are hand-in-hand with living in America the beautiful are taken for granted and their roots forgotten. Magnificent sacrifices have been made for this country. Is it too much to ask for a
Perspective is everything. You need to think about one thing in different perspectives. Imagine walking into a neighborhood with people that are in situations, such as, being hungry or in poverty and you are wealthy so you do nothing. However, if you were living in their shoes, you would be begging for a meal or even a roof over your head. This is the reason why there needs to be more volunteers for community service to help others that do need the help, even if they don’t ask for it. In this article, “Should the United States Establish Mandatory Public Service for Young Adults?” by Kent Ansen (2013), the proposition that the author made is an interesting one and one that I believe in but I think that it should be suggested rather than mandatory.
I believe that the United States should perform one year of community service by the age of 30. The reason why i think that is because i think it would help people understand eachother and bring us all closer together in many ways. One way is that it would pay good so there would be less homeless and less people fighting to feed there families. I believe that kids and odulats would be more thankfull and respectfull for what they have and try harder to become something after they see what they can do.
This document is about if americans should be required to serve a year of service in the military before college. I believe that americans should be required to join the military because my brother has experience and I asked him this and he said the same thing as me because there would be military discounts, open up more jobs, and in the end die an honorable death.
With an increase in national service that would also increase in a need for civilian service. And with that rise to balance out ratio of civilian service to national service it should be every person upon graduation should be forced to choose one or the other, civilian service, or national service. So the question is not if you think civilian service should be required or not but the question of, upon graduation which would you rather choose? It’s a serious matter that I think should be addressed to the general public. Or instead of volunteering the government should bring the draft back into effect.
This essay seeks to examine this law and put forward arguments for and against the application of the law.
The topic of mandatory national service has been around for years now, and there will always be arguments on whether it should be enforced or not. Some may say that it takes away our freedom, but is it not what gives us freedom in the first place? The United States’ military, national service, as well as community service is based on volunteers. That is what makes this country great, but there are less volunteers as years go by. Crime increases, streets are not safe anymore, Americans are oblivious to what is happening around the world. There are so many opportunities to give back to the country, yet, not many care. Today’s generation is based on social trends, and self-gratification. There is also the fact that many young people do not know what to do with their life after high school, some continue to college or focus on work, others do not work nor study. Therefore, all young men and women should be required to give two years to national service because it can help solve problems as well as build the community back together.
“Community Service is important for many reasons. Taking part and volunteering teaches compassion and understanding. You can volunteer for something you really believe and have an interest in, and can volunteer as much or as little as you'd like or have time for.” Community service is really easy to get into. I mean, it is not like you have to put out an application and have an interview in order to do it. It is really easy to get into, and is really fun. It is things you wouldn’t even think are considered, like:
As many other countries mandate young adults partaking in the military for two years, the United States should follow suit. Many beneficial consequences would be rendered as a result of the increase in service. This would also be a great commencement into the real world for any young adult. These statements can be explored by discussing the benefits of free college tuition, disciplined young adults who are ready to follow orders, and the sheer power of numbers.
Making military service mandatory sound like it would be a good idea. This can give discipline, makes stronger citizens, but the reality is doing this takes away freedom and goes against the very foundations of what America is supposed to be. Mandatory military service should not be required for American citizens.
As an 18-year-old tennager, I was forced by my parents to participate a summer volunteer program in my freshman year. Even though I felt that I was a victim of “tyranny” in the beginning, I realized that I actually enjoyed the process of helping people in the middle of the program. Now, I participate that program every year as an active member, and I have gained the personal enrichment that I am unable to learn from other sources such as math club or SAT preparatory class. There is no doubt that community service can bring essential benefits in helping students develop their moral value and future interest, and it should be mandatory because some students attempt to utilize community service as a tool for their own profit without the school supervision.
