Civic Virtue

With civic engagement development being initiated nationwide, we must attempt to understand citizenship in today’s world. Citizenship is often a misunderstood concept.

“We are very community oriented. Each member must actively participate in the yearly fundraiser where all of our proceeds go towards DECA’s state-wide philanthropy, Muscular Dystrophy Associated (MDA). Our local chapter also requires members to work five community service hours per semester.”

I think that citizenship and service are linked in a way. I think that to be a good citizen and properly fulfill your role, you have to help out in the community. I do my part at school by doing what teachers ask of me, always being respectful, and by taking the time to do things the right way such as putting things in the right bins at the end of lunch. I also serve my community by doing community service hours and by picking up litter. I do community service hours by organizing food drives, volunteering at a food bank, and by helping out in a community garden. I help out in this garden by watering it, and I also take the food from it to Friendship Trays.

St. Jude’s target for marketing fundraising is far larger than most charities. Their target; preschoolers, professionals, 8th graders and 80 year olds, television, radio, local drives, school drives, trike-a-thons, math-a-thons, local, county, state and national events. Some of the big ones that you may be familiar with; the “Dream Home Giveaway”, the “Thanks and Giving Campaign” and the radio-a-thon “Country Cares”. Because of last year’s St. Jude’s NFL event, 18% of American’s said they planned to support St. Jude’s “Thanks and Giving Campaign” during this past holiday season. No opportunity is turned away.

The good citizen will education his family and his community by being a role model and preforming his civic duties. Roosevelt shapes his ideas of citizenship around how a man treats the people around him which impacts the entire community. Roosevelt’s ideal citizen focuses more on the lived experience of a man and his actions in community which reflect on public engagement.

Community life and civic engagement are a huge responsibility of citizens, although it is not required by citizens, it is an important aspect of a proper citizen. Residents of a community have the constant responsibility of making the society around them reflect an advance in the eminence of lives in the community. The simple duty of any citizen is to give to the common good. Civic responsibilities are achieved by volunteering and choice. Volunteering, involving in positive organizations and aids, or tutoring people in certain subjects, are all ways that people can subsidize to the good of the community. Small deeds that seem to prosper someone in some way or the other is still a way of helping. To learn something from the assistance that one does to another, the deed does not have to be big, as long as the person providing the assistance is doing it with a good heart they can always acknowledge a lesson. Compassion and love is necessary in helping others. When people have the opportunity to help others they may not always get a gift in return, sometimes they may not even get a reply back. This is when the person has to realize that the purpose of helping someone is not for the thank you or the gift, but is for the satisfaction of their soul, betterment of the other, and the ability to learn a lesson. Assisting people needs to be done in a thoughtful and effective way for it to create a lasting impact on his/her self and on society itself.

There are three kinds of citizens Personally Responsible, Participatory Citizen, and Justice-Oriented Citizen. Personally responsible citizen is on who donate, obey laws, and are responsible. Participatory citizen is where the person holds leadership positions in the community, and puts effort towards making a difference, they understand the government agencies and policies. Justice-oriented citizen is the third kind of citizen. This person wants to understand why things are the way they are. They will do research and get to the bottom of the issue and suggest a ways to improve that concern.

Showing a good sense of patriotism is what citizenship means to me. We can show our patriotism by showing our support in our military. Standing by what they are fighting for because our military have sacrificed many lives in defending our country. Showing them that we care about their well-being is one way of being a good citizen. We can also show a good sense of patriotism by showing respect on our countries flag. Standing up and saluting the flag during general assembly or singing our national anthem shows our deepest respect on our nation’s colors and those who have died defending them. By making civic competence a central aim, the curriculum can emphasize the importance of educating students who are committed to the ideas and values of democracy. An understanding of civic ideals and practices is critical to full participation in society and is an essential component of education for citizenship. For example since civic competence has to rests on the commitment to democratic values, it requires that citizens have the ability to use their knowledge about their community, nation, and world to derive solution and solve real problems.

You are right that many issues in organizations are ethical dilemmas, even some political points are also ethical dilemmas. If it was easy to train, it will definitely be more common. I went to elementary in Mexico and actually remember having a class called Public Spirit and Ethics almost the entire six years of elementary, and to be honest I do not remember anything from it, hopefully this class helped me develop as a moral person. If we don’t participate in such activities, then we don’t get a chance to know people. Civic engagement is all about to improve our society, but if we don’t care about this things, then how can we improve our society? As a citizen, it is our responsibility to improve our society. Engaging in such activities also can help us to get an idea of what people want?

Being an active citizen is something that everyone in the United States is required to be, yet not everyone actually is one. Many people may believe that just voting is enough to be a good citizen, but voting is actually the least of their duties. Citizens have a set of rights and responsibilities, including the right to participate in decisions that affect public welfare. Being an active citizen means that people get involved in their local communities and democracy at all levels, from their town to nationwide activity. This can be volunteering to clean up the park or street, or educating students on democratic values, skills and participation. Active citizenship is a mixture of knowledge, attitude, skills and actions that aim to contribute to building and preserving a democratic society. When citizens speak up about problems in their communities, public officials take notice and may take action to answer their concerns, which empowers the citizens of the community.
