Every individual has the opportunity to decide their future career path. There are various fields to choose from, such as the medical field or the business field, and each requires different qualifications and interests. One of the career fields that people choose to indulge themselves in is engineering, of which there are many different types, such as petroleum, electrical, and aerospace engineering. Although the techniques and ideology of civil engineering have been around for centuries, it continues to grow and evolve over time due to innovative and advanced technology. The Great Wall not only acted as a defensive measure against enemies, it was a trade route and supply line that allowed for transportation to all points along the wall. Following these manifestations of planning and building came the advent and importance of roadways, aqueducts, bridges, etc. During the evolutionary phase of civil engineering, the Greeks and Romans emerged as the leaders in this field. They advanced forward the use of columns in the construction of buildings, bridges, and roadways. One of the most famous uses of columns in Roman architecture is the Pantheon, which “was built as a Roman temple and later consecrated as a Catholic Church” (Matthews). The Romans, specifically, are famous for their invention and implementation of arches. These were used in many aspects of construction, such as in the Colosseum. At the time, the Colosseum was one of the largest buildings in existence, in large part due to the use of the arch system. It was built with “tiers of arches and half-columns of Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian orders” (Matthews). The arch system allowed buildings to be built larger than they were previously, because they were much sturdier. They were also used in the construction of bridges and other structures. The Great Wall of China was originally built during the Qin and Han Dynasties to protect China from the Xiongnu. It took the people of ancient China nearly 2,000 years to build and spans nearly 6,000 miles. However, building the wall was extremely costly in terms of men and supplies. Despite the cost of the wall, it proved to be immensely beneficial to the Chinese people. This is a result of the wall providing protection for merchants, the people within the wall and preventing the Xiongnu from invading.

The arch was not invented by the Romans, as arches have been used in cultures far predating the Romans; however, the Romans did find a way to perfect the arch. Before the Romans, arches were used to support relatively small amounts of weight, such as in storerooms, these arches limited the scale of buildings they supported. This structure was named the Pantheon most likely because Pliny the elder, a spectator during the time of Vespasian 's rule saw this and referred to it as the “Pantheum”. Obstacles had never been obstructing my effort to succeed in life. As an engineer to be, it is important to me to be prepared for the hurdles in the real world. The world nowadays needs a person who could compete and has great abilities to stand on the same level as others. Multiple skills and critical opinion of an issue are essential for an engineer to jump into this challenging career. For me, a strategic planning and full preparation need to achieve the aim of being an expert engineer.
