As we set out in the world for the first time, we are starting to understand the world around us is flawed. Most people are shielded during their childhood in order to protect their innocence, but as we go out into the real world we need to understand that people defy the rules of society. There is a large difference between disobeying the laws that every citizen must abide by and standing up to a cause we believe in. Disobedience is important to the progression of the world around us, but there are different types of disobedience. There is the disobedience that has a positive effect, such as people peacefully protesting for what they believe in and fighting for a change. There is also disobedience that has a negative effect, such as people breaking the rules for the fun of it. Disobedience is because it is necessary for social progress, saves lives, and starts a conversation about difficult subjects. However, it can also cause conflict. Civil disobedience is important because it can save lives. During World War II, many people in living in Nazi Germany blindly followed Hitler's orders. This resulted in the organized killing of over 11 million people. Those who chose to disobey these orders saved the lives of many. One of these heroes is Oskar Schindler, who saved over 1,000 Jewish lives by disguising them as workers in his factory. He provided them with food, shelter, and safety, making it possible for families to grow and thrive for generations to come. Another example us how in war times, it is common to be told to attack civilian areas. Although uncommon, some people choose to disobey these orders because they feel it is necessary in order to save innocent people. Lastly, there is the Clean Needle Act. Health care workers who support this are against drug use, however they provide a safe way for addicts to use drugs. They are going against their orders as medical workers to “do no harm”, however it saves people from contracting diseases they could get from using dirty needles. Disobedience can also help start a conversation about difficult subjects.
