“From the formation of America to 1860, the people in this country were divided. This division was a result of location and personal sentiments. Peace could not continue in a country filled with quarrels that affected the common American. There is a common misconception that the American Civil War was fought only over slavery, when in fact there were several other reasons for why the War Between the States was fought. The northern states one by one started to abolish slavery, and with the help of “The fugitive slave act along with the publishing of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” helped expand the support for abolishing slavery nationwide” and the election of Abraham Lincoln had states beginning to worry (history). Election of Abraham Lincoln The election of Abraham Lincoln had a lot of states in the west and south worried, they worried that he was going to abolish slavery for good and that was the last thing they wanted. A lot of the first states started to secede from the union mostly southern states. Most Southerners had started to rebel and Lincoln was desperate for men to fight against these rebellions thus starting war (English). The south had been so worried about the election of the president the south started to send emissaries to other slave holding states. North and South Divide The north and south divide is what caused the two sides in the war, southern states believed slavery was right and northern states did not. The northern states wanted to abolish slavery and the south was not letting the happen. Incidents in the 1820s such as the Nullification Crisis and so on, is what began the controversy between the north and south. The controversy had begun to get so big that southerners began to protest , immigrants had begun to flock to the northern areas which was frightening the southern states. Northern politicians had tried to compromise and ensure the new states in the union were free-soil, which made matters worse and slave owners felt they had the right to own slaves on “their” property then. The “southern way of life” was not being kept to its standards and people were not happy, the southerners comfort system of living and its cultural influence was growing out, and turning into a more “northern way of
