There were many innovations during the civil war. Many of them are still used today. Among these I have chosen the Telegraph as a innovation that is still relevant today. The popularization of this invention is what made it successful and made it last this long. It may have changed a bit over time but still has the same long distance communication idea in mind. This invention had a huge impact on the war and on long distance communication in general. It was the first machine that could communicate long distances in mere minutes. This in turn revolutionized the war. General who were many miles away could send directions and orders to troops in seconds. People could not communicate letters in the civilian world instead of having to wait weeks …show more content…
This is one of the legacys it leaft. The other ones it has left is the decendents of it that we use today. I feel anything from home phones to cell phones, These all are the improved and moderized legacy of the telegraph. Other legacys such as the one it had during the war is now replaced by radios, another decendednt of the telegrpah. These are only some of its legacys. It has imcatede me personally because i couldnt see a world without this instant way of communication. I love my phone, and i dont know how i would function without it. It has also affected me because we all relay so much on it. We want news storys, and big events, ect, all instenttaniusly, but back ten it took days, weeks, or moths to reach the outer most parts of the U.S. it goes for the World as well to hear of the current news, or other events that jave taken place. There are many technological advancments that were products of the civil war, and the telegrapgh was onl one of them. It had a huge impact in its time, revolutioizing lng distance communocation. Its legacy is its decendents the land line phone and cell phone, as well as it being the first long ditnce communicator. And lastly how much of an impact it has made personnaly, and how much sociaity would have changed if it had not been invented. I coud not see such a connected, world today without this key
The Civil War was the first modern war that helped strengthen the technology and industrial system. But their industry and technology distinguished the
There is also war on the water. During the Civil war, both the Union and Confederate navy moved very quickly so that they can modernize their fleets. There for they made Ironclads. At the Tim, Ironclads were there the modern vessels; they were wooden with partially encased iron plating. This made the ship harder to move around but made it more difficult to sink. The North had the most success making 25 of these ships. Commissioned and in service. These ships had the biggest role on the sea and in naval engagements. One major improvement was less drag, this made the ship much faster than it was before (and steam engine is faster in general). There were many other technologies at the time such as photography, telegraphs, microfilms, hot air balloons, and
The weapons, machinery, and communication changed the future of the North and the South. The biggest invention was the telegraph. The telegraph used a secret code called Morse Code that was created by Samuel Morse. Morse code was used to send letters secretly using combinations of long and short signals of light or sound. The telegraph was a way to send coded messages from one place to another in limited time. Generals used it to send messages about plans of attack and battle information. Even President Abraham Lincoln used the telegraph. President Abraham Lincoln had a special room made that was hidden from the rest of his people, where he would go to send messages to generals to give information and commands. Other Technological Advances were bullets. One bullet used in the Civil War was called the Minie Bullet. The Minie Ball was a shaped large bullet that went through enemies killing them instantly. Over ninety percent of all casualties in the Civil War were caused by the Minie Ball. Another large advance was transportation. Railroads were created to move supplies from one place to another in short time. Railroads were made from state to state to move supplies to battle
The first telegraph was invented during this war to help Abraham Lincoln command troops. Since the telegraph was invented due to this war, Abraham Lincoln managed to command his troops through it over long distances. The telegraph was extremely successful during this time that it eventually became what phones are today. Many new weapons, like the first machine gun, were invented, that shoot faster and further, helping the troops in battle. Many weapons that people use for hunting and other wars today derived from the battles of the Civil War. The weapons that the soldiers used to use were single-shot guns that could not shoot far, but since those weapons have drastically improved during this war, it has changed the way people use weapons today (History.com Staff). Not only was the Civil War the reason the telegraph and better weapons were invented, but it was also the reason many machines that helped in battles were invented. Weber notes that the hot air balloon was first invented during this war in order to assist troops who were fighting on the ground, thus the reason hot air balloons are abundant today. Also, the submarine was extremely enhanced during this time in order to assist many battles along with the hot air balloons. Since these machines have greatly improved during this war, it is the reason they are more abundantly used today. All in all, the Civil War has had a
These innovations were used for a more advanced warfare. Espionage was very popular, and the hot air balloon expedited the process. “Balloon operators used another wartime innovation, the telegraph, to let commanders on the ground know of Confederates movements.” (PBS “Civil War Innovations”) This made it that much safer to gain information about the opposing side. Another special invention was the submarine. Naval warfare was a changed fight. Many of the techniques that were previously used had to be re-thought. Submarines could surprise attack naval ships. The submarine was developed by Horace Lawson Hunley, James McClintock, and Baxter Watson. These crafts were not very effective, as the ship was the earliest model and had a difficult time firing its “torpedoes” or mines (gilderlehrman.org, The Civil War and early submarine warfare). Often times, it did more damage to itself than it did to the ironclad ships. Ironclad ships were an invention that came from Britain right around war time. There were very few weak points in the ship's hull, and enemy ships had hope that they hit one of the ships vulnerable points(Civil War Trust, Steel, and Steam). This caused strategists huge problems. They had to make precise shots in order to take down an enemy ship. They had to expedite the process to keep up with the ever-changing
The technology war took place after a massive change in technology that came in the form of a wave; the soldiers were in a state of a mix-up and unprepared for the change in technology, and it caught them off guard. The technology transformed all the warfare’s that were present, after the modification, the civil war existed as the major conflict in which the infrastructure that got coined by the development of the railway transport got used in the transportation of troops as well as supplies and as the first to see railroad junctions. The transformation that took place in technology also brought about a great sea war that existed between the Union vessel and the Confederate vessel in the year
Amongst the most lasting of factors stemming from the Civil War are the weapons that were developed. Before the Civil War, the weapons used were highly unreliable, and were not advanced enough to provide the needed defense for a young nation such as our own. Innovative minds created many interesting ways to demolish their enemies without ever having to fire a shot or go into full combat through different types of bombs that were in disguise. Among the advancements in the Civil War were the torpedo, the carbine rifle, the minie` ball, several models of rifle-muskets, rocket launchers, rocket bombs, "Greek Fire," and a wide array of other secret weapons.
The civil war had many new technologies arise that made it unique compared to the wars of the past. One of these technological improvements was the introduction of the Ironclad warship. This technology was introduced during the showdown between the Monitor and the Merrimac . These two Ironclad warships fought to a stalemate , but this struggle forever changed how ships would be designed. Another technology that had not existed in previous wars in american history was the reconnaissance balloon it allowed the union to gather information and send it through telegraph to the various commanders. The civil war brought the first submarine, The CSS Hunley. The Hunley successfully sank the Union ship Housatonic, but unfortunately the Hunley itself was damaged. The submarine would eventually prove to be important for all armies in the wars to come.
The Civil War forever changed how media was consumed, especially during war times. Never before had there been such a public outcry for consumption of news and updates of what exactly was happening on the different fronts. Plenty of printing presses existed across the country, and newly invented cameras paved the way for new ways people could witness the war. News traveled more quickly as well with the use of railroads to distribute daily papers. While some areas of media stayed the same on both sides of the war, there were some differences, such as exactly how much of the media was consumed on either side. Both sides had problems with generals shutting down newspapers, however the two sides were vastly different in how they were able to handle the ginormous growth of media consumption.
When the telegraph became known it made it much easier send messages the message would be sent instantly. Many used the telegraph like the military, business owners, journalists and reporters, and just any people. Then after that they started this thing called morse code which meant like certain amounts of clicks and beeps which is good because the morse code is still used today. Also it was an inventor named Granville woods he created the multiplex telegraph which you could use on trains to run a schedule to avoid collisions with other trains. Then later after that the telephone was invented it allowed instant communication through speech it helped the deaf. Then later on in 1877 it had the first telephone line and company it was called the Bell Telephone Company.
The students will be able to explain and analyze the new technologies used during the Civil War. The class will analyze the new technology that emerged during the Civil War and how that technology affected the outcome of the war. Essential Question: Explain why historians call the Civil War the first Modern war?
After the first battle of the Civil War the Upper states in the South also seceded. Abraham Lincoln was able to persuade Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky, and Missouri to stay in the Union. By doing this Lincoln gained access to the river systems in Kentucky and Missouri that led into the heart of the South. This control effected the 1862 invasions of the south, which provided the North with most of its early military successes. The Civil War was total trench warfare. Technology was the main event that influenced total trench warfare. Technology led to ideas such as strategy, weapons, and transportation. It wasn't until 1865 the Civil War ended with the surrender of the South's army. The Civil War was an event that impacted the United States greatly economically, politically and socially. This impact called for great reconstruction after the Civil War.
If one were to clearly state the biggest impact, it would be that the telephone allowed smooth communication to take place.

The Telegraph helped to make communication across the battlefields easier. The Most noticeable thing about the telegraph is that it proved its value as a operational, tactical, and strategic communication device. The telegraph was able to help the field commanders to send real-time battlefield operations and it allowed the senior military officials to coordinate strategy across far distances. These capabilities were key factors in the North's (union army’s) victory.
