Brother against Brother, Father against son, why were they even still fighting. War is an appalling place, weapons of ruination, taking lives of ones we love. The civil war was a place of Technological advancements in the field of weapons, medicines, and many other types of technology. These advancements in technology changed the tides of war. The new weapons able to shred apart the human body, medicine to help your sick brothers, and conveyance of getting around. Throughout the time of war, people all around were looking for advancements in technology to get ahead. Guns and Bullets The Confederates had a lot of success in their manufacturing venture. To be more specific, the Confederate Armies Ordnance department had done great piece …show more content…
At times even flat cars were sometimes used for those who had the strength to hold on. Some cars could hold up to thirty to forty men. Carried on stretchers, they were assembled along each side of the freight. On the car space was limited, air was ventilated through the skylights in the roof, if it was cold the box/freight car was heated by one or more stoves, nurses on bored could care for basic/and or immediate needs of the men, and for those who were injured the suspension springs made the ride a little more bearable for those in …show more content…
There is also war on the water. During the Civil war, both the Union and Confederate navy moved very quickly so that they can modernize their fleets. There for they made Ironclads. At the Tim, Ironclads were there the modern vessels; they were wooden with partially encased iron plating. This made the ship harder to move around but made it more difficult to sink. The North had the most success making 25 of these ships. Commissioned and in service. These ships had the biggest role on the sea and in naval engagements. One major improvement was less drag, this made the ship much faster than it was before (and steam engine is faster in general). There were many other technologies at the time such as photography, telegraphs, microfilms, hot air balloons, and
At the onset of the war, both sides struggled with combat capable ships. The Union though, was able to establish a much stronger production capability than the Confederates, who lacked materials and secure locations to build. The Union quickly set into production a new class of fighting ships, which would be called the City Classers. These first of its kind ships, designed by Samuel Pook, consisted of three gun ports off the bow, four on either side and two at the rear. The sides and top of the
A Rifle could shoot a bullet up to 1,000 yards–and were more accurate. However, until the 1850s it was nearly impossible to use these guns in battle because, since a rifle’s bullet had roughly the same diameter as its barrel, they took too long to load. (Soldiers sometimes had to pound the bullet into the barrel with a mallet.)
The Union navy had enough ships and sailors to make 4 full squadrons with two being along the Atlantic coast and two in the Gulf of Mexico. Any problem to a growth in force though is that the opposition is also building up there forces to match. Knowing that their fat slow merchant vessels could not outrun the new Union ships that were outside their ports the Confederacy had to come up with the own plan. Unfortunately, for them they did not have the resources or skilled sailors that the Union had. For the Confederacy this meant they had to seek outside help and this came in the form of the British. They designed and built smaller faster ships that could out run the blockading ships of the Union. These ships also used paddle wheels and burned on a smokeless anthracite coal which would allow these ships to get up to 17 plus knots. These new ships were made and manned by the private sector of the British navy and would help the Confederacy fight back against the ostentatious plan laid forth by the Union. The British officers would take their leave and during that time they would make a run against the blockade and make several thousand extra dollars. This was a great incentive fee for those sailors to make the
War is something that everyone knows about. it is very prominent and chances are throughout the history of the world there is always someone effected by it during any point in time. Wars come and go leaving many good and bad things behind, whichever light it is looked at from, weaponry is always one of those things. War time is notorious for pushing technology to the edge, this including weaponry. There have been several wars that impacted future weaponry but the Civil War is on the farthest away that you can still see a prominent major impact even with modern day weaponry. The Civil war took many existing weapon technologies and improved them as well as standardizing them. Around this time period new weaponry technology were also
During the Civil War, great advancements in technology and weaponry were happening. Both the Union and Confederate side of the war used what were considered typical weapons. For example, they both used knives, swords, pistols, rifles, and muskets. Artillery such as cannons were also very popular. Though all these weapons were used in wars before the Civil war, such as the Mexican War, advancements were made to better the pre-existing weapons. Better bullets were made for rifles. Rifle barrels were advanced to make them more precise and shoot farther distances. Advancements were also made in the naval department. Before the Civil war, battleships were made out of wood, but around the civil war, iron started to be added to battleships. This newly
The Civil War ,was the worst war in the eighteen hundreds. It put brother against brother, but before the war was worse. there were too many close calls. Some are what brought this monster of war to America, it created a divide that we never fully recovered from. First and largest matter was States rights that they fought for. Now They should be able to secede when ever they wanted, but the Government said they could not secede. So something definitely became amiss in our wonderful Country and that was only strike one, two more major problems and America is out of here.
The civil war had many new technologies arise that made it unique compared to the wars of the past. One of these technological improvements was the introduction of the Ironclad warship. This technology was introduced during the showdown between the Monitor and the Merrimac . These two Ironclad warships fought to a stalemate , but this struggle forever changed how ships would be designed. Another technology that had not existed in previous wars in american history was the reconnaissance balloon it allowed the union to gather information and send it through telegraph to the various commanders. The civil war brought the first submarine, The CSS Hunley. The Hunley successfully sank the Union ship Housatonic, but unfortunately the Hunley itself was damaged. The submarine would eventually prove to be important for all armies in the wars to come.
Following the Civil War, a second industrial revolution in America brought many changes to the nation’s agriculture sector. The new technologies that were created transformed how farmers worked and the way in which the sector functioned. Agriculture expanded and became more industrial. Meanwhile government policies, or lack of them for a while, and hard economic conditions put difficult strains on farmers and their occupation. These changes in technology, economic conditions, and government policy from 1865 to 1900 transformed and improved agriculture while leaving farmers in hardship.
The Civil War was an important event not only in America's history but also for the World. At the time, America was the foremost runner in the industrialization and one of the biggest providers for raw resources such as cotton from the South; who provided 1/4 of the world's' cotton at the time. Even though the Civil War is the bloodiest war in America's history with 750,000 casualties; it was also a huge catalyst that pushed technology faster and further than ever before. The Civil War gave birth to inventions such as the Ironclad ships, submarines and repeating rifles, that changed military tactics and strategies. But it also gave way to technology like the telegraph and photography, which later on help connect people together in a way like
With two determined armies in the midst of a civil war, the development of weaponry is extremely important. This importance can be seen in the American Civil War. Before the American Civil War, muskets dominated the battlefield. These weapons were inaccurate and had a low firing rate. Unusual weapons were sometimes used, but were still uncommon. Other weapons showed great usefulness, and eventually began to replace older weapons. Among these were the Minié (Minie) ball and the Spencer repeating rifle.
The Civil War was a four year armed conflict between northern and southern sections of the United States. The Civil War cost more American lives than any other war in history. There were bout 3 million people who fought in the beginning of the Civil War and about 600,000 people’s lives were lost at the end of the war. What began for many as a romantic adventure soon became a heartbreaking bitter struggle between the two parts of a divided country. This, however, was more than the industrial North fighting against the agricultural South. There were divided families with brother fighting brother. Some Northerners joined the Southern ranks and some Southerners were in the Union
The Civil War, the bloodiest war in American History, had many causes that turned brother against brother. The issue of slavery was the largest conflict between the north and the south. The south was upset with many things such as Slavery, government, and legislative issues. All these conflicts eventually led to secession, and the horrific war began.
Technology has not only significantly improved daily life, but it has also changed warfare. In the 1860’s, controversies of the practice of slavery, westward expansion, and political authorities caused high tensions between the Northern Union and the Southern Confederacy. As the tensions built up, the Civil War began on April 12th, 1861 after the secession of the Southern states. Determining the independence of the Confederacy and the fate of the Union, the Civil War was a period of major technological transformation. In 1865, the Union officially won the Civil War with advantages such as industrialization, a larger population, and most importantly, technological innovations. Advancement in technology, such as the telegraph, railroads, and
The Civil War was caused by many several pressures, principles, and prejudices, fueled by sectional differences, and was finally set into motion by a most unlikely set of political events. From economic differences to political differences all the way up to cultural differences, the North and the South opposed each other. These tensions were further increased after the western expansion of the United States. By the early 1850’s a civil war was known to be likely coming soon.
Technology greatly affected the way in which wars were fought, especially in World War I. The inventions of the repeating machine gun, the development of poison gas, and the introduction of the first tanks caused armies to fight using the bunkering method. This allowed men to huddle in trenches along what are called skirmish lines and throw, lob, and fire by other means weapons to cause damage while men were protected by about 4 to 5 feet deep earth. This caused men to fight in rear or echelon columns behind tanks can basically caused defensive fighting tactics resulting in drawn out protracted battles.
