However, being apart of a team is much more important than that, it is a group of people you rely on, that push you to do better. Being apart of a group can requires you to do the same for others: be there for them, push them to be better. Orchestra is very similar to a sports team, in that there is no real “star” of the show. Because, if one person messes up then they affect everyone. When everyone works hard and plays well together it can be a great experience, but when people don’t try and lower the talent level of the group, it can be very frustrating. Because of this, the orchestra dynamic can be very discouraging to be a part of. In a high school orchestra you will see three main types of people: hard workers, attempters, and slackers.

While most boys my age were playing baseball or lacrosse, I embarked on a slightly different path. When I was nine years old my parents enrolled me at a local music school to take clarinet lessons. I couldn’t even spell clarinet. I still remember being fascinated by the cork connecting the upper and lower joints and particularly the bell. My brother had played the clarinet before me, so my fate as a musician seemed predetermined. I learned music on his clarinet even if the bell, the bottom piece, was slightly dented. However, I enjoyed the sound and the music I produced in my first year motivated me to be a better clarinetist.

The Western flute has more of a higher note in the pitch and volume. Tori Kadotsuke’s sound is more capable towards different genres and themes because the flute sound is split into three octaves and a pentatonic scale. With this, unlike the Western flute, the Tori Kadotsuke flute can start with small tone notes and transition into more primary notes. There is also the Japanese Aesthetics of ma where it allows space between the beats and the sound to breathe.
