Class and Classism My gender, having a military parent, our type of society and being a middle-class family is the biggest influences in terms of my own biases. Lareau states the best example of the next influence, which is how a person’s class affects their growth and development in Unequal Childhoods (2003). She talks about how the class of a child gives them more opportunity for growth and advancement. In society today we perceive the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer. Throughout history, and even today, it appears poor, middle, and working classes all strive to help each other, but the upper class has more of self-interest. After reading Liu’s article (2013) and from the class session on classism I came to realized that I do participate in classism, specifically that of upward classism. I came to realize that not only am I bias towards the upper class, but I have labeled individuals of the upper class as snobs and entitled, which falls into upward classism. Learning this and becoming more aware of my bias towards the upper class can prevent any damage of unintentional comments, microagressions, or nonverbal behaviors made towards an upper class client while in the social work profession. The next section I will be talking about is gender and sexism.
Gender and Sexism Like we learned in class sex is a biological description of a person being male or female based on anatomical category, where as gender is a social construct based upon societies definition of what it means to be male or female (Ortega, 2017). In the current society, gender shapes a large portion of an individual, both conscious and subconscious. In Ridgeway’s article (2009), the gender of an individual forms the background identity, which gives them their behaviors and biases. Using myself as an example, I was, in a way, taught males should be the rock of the family. Men should keep the negative emotions to themselves and attempt to show only the happiness. Gender can be defined as “sex roles” which are conditions that one considers to be for men or women. People tends to mistake it with sex or thinks that they are both the same. We discussed about the patterns of gender which how the authors of The Kaleidoscope of Gender describes it as “regularized, prepackaged ways of thinking, feeling, and acting” (Spade and Valentino,2017). It becomes an identity for us. We believe that there is and can only be two genders, being masculine for men and feminine for women. These roles has been forced onto us since birth: blue for boys, and pink for girls. You can see the roles being push onto a person throughout one’s life, but we don’t notice it since it’s “normal” to us.
